Okay so I don’t think this is true - historically speaking, mass violence consistently comes from an attempted rejection (rather than a *lack*) of empathetic impulses, which exist whether we want them to or not, and desire to distance oneself from an externalized target.

There is a reason that alcohol played such an enormous role in the Holocaust, for example, because it in many cases provided a sort of empathy-dampening mechanism for perpetrators who wanted to commit violence without remorse but may have otherwise been unable to.

and the pilot was able to fight back, a dentist and other medically-trained passengers were able to stabilize him, and the pilots got the plane down despite the tail rudder breaking off during the copilot's crash attempt.

everyone lucked the hell out on the terror attack today where the co-pilot stabbed the pilot, passengers took down the attacker *and* there seem to have been two off-duty pilots who were able to land the plane safely. Could have been one of the worst attacks for a while otherwise.
