Today's nap-dream involved attempting to contain a serial killer (unsuccessfully) and I woke up with my heartrate double normal. My brain does not appear to comprehend the idea of *resting* during nap. C'mon, dude. You're missing the whole point here. I don't even like slasher flicks!

The cover for Uncanny Magazine Issue 67, "Mushroom Mother of Us All" by Paul Lewin. In the center, an elderly Black woman has her eyes serenely closed, a brown-orange nose piercing on her right nostril and an orange line/mark on her chin. Her hair are the green leaves of trees, trunks growing out of the side of her face, and mushrooms growing through the leaves. She wears large earrings of orange, sienna, with aqua and white lines and dots. Her hands hold a bowl lined with Black faces and mushrooms growing out of the bowl. In the center of the bowl and thus the front of her chest is an orange sun surrounded by a dark pink halo like a globe. The quote reads: "The first time Kittu teleported was into the lavatory of a plane bound for London, fifteen seconds before it crashed in a field south of Gatwick. One moment she was brushing her teeth in front of the bathroom mirror in her apartment in Toronto, wishing she had the money to go on vacation, and the next moment she was thrown upward,

This is adorable. Also reminds me of the one random time I was going through an airport after a visit home and the TSA guy stopped me and said hey, I remember you, we went to (my elementary school), you were a couple years ahead of me. You never know who might remember you, decades later.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

The equities here could not be more one-sided. Defendants admit that they
provide a service without fully knowing how it works.

This is not just any service. It is one that Defendants themselves concede poses an existential risk to the continued
survival of humankind.

Defendants claim they cannot stop barreling forward with their potentially civilization-ending endeavors unless they are forced to do so by the
government. They have asked the government to tie them to the mast.

Plaintiff brings good news to the Defendants: The Florida Attorney General is answering your

River's an active dreamer and often startles herself awake with growling or hissing, but this is the first time I've seen her bush out her tail in her sleep. (My reaching for the phone woke her.) No idea if it was a scary dream or an exciting one; awake, she puffs up for both.
A dilute tortoiseshell cat curled up in a sleepy ball on a pillow. Her tail is partially floofed.

It's River's gotcha day! Eight years since I met her at the shelter, where the staff kept letting her out to run around because she was hanging off the cage door yelling her head off. Now she just catapults herself up doorframes and the various climbing towers, when she's not stealing my chair.

Random travel memories. What surprised me most about Poulnabrone was how small it actually is. I'd only seen pictures without scale and envisioned something like Stonehenge, but it's only around the height of a tall person.
Poulnabrone, an Irish stone dolmen structure in the Burren. One very large flat slab of stone rests on narrow walls constructed of other upright slabs, surrounded by a landscape like a puzzle of flat rocks filled in with grassy grout.
