Only one in four professors is a woman. We show that motherhood is a key driver of the leaky pipeline, particularly at early career stages. More details in the summary and working paper below👇 Sign up to hear my presentation of the research in the CEPR Applied Economics Seminar on 23 March.

I am heartbroken by the passing of our colleague Ghazala Azmat. A wonderful economist and AEJ: Economic Policy Board member, she was generous with her time and a vital contributor to many areas within applied economics and economic policy. She will be sorely missed. My heart goes out to her family.

Why? I still rely on my early days student job network in Ministry of Finance (my thesis partner), Ministry of Economics, and the Centralbank in my research. I think engaging with practioners and policymakers is valuable to university learning and research (3 childbirths perhaps less so)

Such relevant analysis! DK abortion rights have just been expanded from 12 to 18 weeks (June 1), and young women of 15-17y no longer need their parents' consent.

What happens to women when they are denied an abortion? Short run: their risk of death rises. A full 15 years later, they experience: more health issues, lower attainment, reduced labor-force participation, higher single motherhood, higher poverty, + greater government assistance

Yes, younger/lower or same earnings as partner fathers really seem to get a productivity boost, but fathers with a private sector partner, see productivity penalties.

Publication quality remains unchanged after birth, but impact declines —indicating that both knowledge creation and knowledge diffusion are hampered by motherhood.

Motherhood penalties are even greater among researchers who are active in publishing at birth - at 40 percentage points.

📉 Key findings: Mothers suffer penalties of 25 percentage points on their annual output of scientific publications compared to fathers in the first seven years after childbirth, and participation in research publishing is 16% lower among mothers relative to fathers.
