A bit of lore for the world of Becoming Barghest! Basically took some stuff from the existing myth and then came up with the rest and how they relate to the rest of the supernatural world for my own spin on them

The Barghest

Although not technically classified as a true curse, the Barghest spirit is bound to a particular family bloodline. The barghest form exists within the Veil and may manifest within only one soul of that bloodline at a time.
As it is not a curse, the barghest spirit cannot be exorcised from the vessel once merged.

The soul's direction.

The Barghest spirit must be invited by the soul itself. All mortal souls possess a small amount of magic; however, in order to merge with a form from the Veil, a soul must be sufficiently attuned and possess an abnormally large quantity of magic.

This should not be confused with Witches, who carry the greatest quantity of magic amongst mortals. The concentration of magic within a witch’s soul is too great and would destroy any of these spirits were a direct merging to be attempted.

Merging

Unlike cursed souls, such as werewolves and vampires, Barghests belong to the shapeshifter classification of monster. As such, they cannot be created through biting, infectection, or undeath. A mortal cannot simply be transformed into a Barghest through these means.

The only natural method is through an 'awakening.’ During an awakening, the barghest spirit passes from the veil through a tear and merges with its corresponding mortal soul. Alternatively, a witch may assist by guiding the spirit into the mortal realm and facilitating the merging process.

Note: The practice of using witches to facilitate the merging process has declined considerably since the 1600s. For further information, see, Barghests and the Church, page 67)

Variants

Barghests are commonly depicted as omens of death, both by mortals and by supernatural beings. Although this association is widespread, Barghest themselves may possess a wide range of temperaments and behaviours.

Barghests will often guard their villages, communities, and those whom they consider closest to them. As a result, they are frequently territorial, particularly when encountering other barghests.

Unlike werewolves, Barghests do not develop a feral mindset. They retain their awareness, reasoning, and sense of self, even when transformed. This combination of supernatural strength and a clear, conscious mind make the Barghest a particularly formidable foe.

All Barghest possess the ability to flash Death's Door through their eyes. Should an icy chill run down a spine upon making eye contact with a Barghest, it is generally considered a warning of impending doom.

The physical build of a barghest may vary considerably. Some may resemble great black dogs, while others take on a more Hobgoblin-like appearance. There are virtually endless variations in form, with the appearance of each individual relying heavily upon the mortal soul with which the spirit has merged. The same influence may also determine the Barghest’s temperament and behaviour.

Remember: A barghest's nose is one of the most effective means of detecting magic. Even before awakening, a compatible mortal may find themselves instinctively drawn towards supernatural activity. Those wishing to remain covert should therefore exercise particular caution in the presence of a Barghest

I would like to hope that the absurd pricing strategy for fast charging keeps PHEVs away. They are pointless compared with modern electric cars, you are either carrying an heavy battery doing very little for long range or a heavy engine with maintinance requirements for home charging..

I was 11 years old on 9/11 and I wasn't phased by it upon first hearing about it. I knew that we bombed other countries. I saw Saddam Hussein on Animaniacs. I assumed other countries bombed us sometimes. My parents had to sit me down to explain why we're above the violence we inflict on others.
