which atrocities have weight, which history has relevance, is always a choice, and it affects what we do in the present.

i fucking hate the phrase “crash out”. it makes throwing a tantrum seem cool rather than childish. that it’s usually used as a threat doesn’t help.

you will encounter more opportunities in life to change the batteries on a smoke alarm than you will to run into a burning building and no one gives a shit you changed those batteries but it is still very important and why are you waiting on a burning building, know what i’m saying, it’s a metaphor

Grayscale image, originally from XKCD, showing a complicated structure of rectangular blocks all stacked on top of each other, with a single thin rectangle hidden in the corner holding the whole thing together. The structure is labeled "All American Jewish culture," and the thin rectangle is labeled with an image of Sunkist Fruit Gems.

On Boston marriage, 1894
BOSTON MARRIAGE

What the Scarcity of Men in Massachusetts Has Brought About

The funniest of all social developments is that which goes under the head of Boston marriages. Two women, as well known as Susan Channing and Edna D. Cheney, have made separate appeals for this new departure of female habit, and have defended it with considerable success.

A Boston marriage is described to be a sympathetic union of two women, who have not been able to make good and agreeable matches with members of the opposite sex. Miss Cheney is of the opinion that in our present state of civilization they seem to be necessary and should not be interfered with. Miss

--The Evening Herald, 21 Feb 1894Channing also believes that since in our present state of civilization marriage like wealth is getting to be more and more the privilege of the few, the women unsought in wedlock or unable to get the men of their choice should have the right to form sympathetic unions with each other.

What is to hinder a Boston couple from adopting a child or even more than one? Why not grow a household in this manner? The meanest thing about old-maid life is that it takes to cats, or parrots, or poodles -- generally cats. I see no reason why a cat shall not have a share of sympathy but it has no claim upon a love it cannot appreciate. Besides, cat-love is a dreadfulapology for baby-love. By all means let our Bostonese adopt children. In this way, while there is no increase of children, there will be a decrease of homeless children.

rooting for a good team that’s losing sucks so much more than rooting for a bad team that’s losing, and rooting for a bad team that’s winning is so much more exciting than rooting for a good team that’s winning. this skeet is brought to you by U11 semi-final baseball.

Turns out, as with all stories of AI achievement, the solving of the millennium problem was accomplished through theft of someone's work and done in a way that isn't actually all that useful for humankind! www.npr.org/2026/09/22/n...

AI solved one of math's hardest problems. Humanity learned nothing (so far)
OpenAI beat humans to solving the Navier-Stokes problem, but mathematicians say the AI's solution isn't telling them much.

The US already got a do over. A mulligan. A second chance. Much of the world, especially US allies, were ready to write off Trump’s first term as a fluke. The American people’s choice to put him back in power—as a convicted felon, after an openly bigoted, anti-democracy campaign—showed it was not.

If you think it's really important, in the short term, to vote for a compromise candidate while doing other work to protect the vulnerable people that candidate's words or actions might harm? Then your job is also campaigning. You have to campaign now, to convince people.

Filling out more Anthropic Settlement paperwork, and I still find the paltry sum each of us is getting to be totally galling. Anthropic stole the life's work of thousands of people, and they get to continue making money off of our work in perpetuity, and each of us get maybe a couple grand, tops.

Anti Jewish violence is real and horrific. Being a victim of this violence is not the quotidian experience of most Jewish people right now. Encouraging Jewish people to live in terror when they are not actually in danger is deeply manipulative and is used to manufacture consent for genocide

This is the oldest* surviving Snakes & Ladders board in the world. Specifically, it's Gyan Chaupar, the Game of Knowledge. It's from the late 18th Century, but the game is much older - paper & cloth are not resilient media. The ladders represent virtue, the snakes vice. The scorpions are decorative.
