Bandwidth is one thing which is still really cheap, unless you are streaming audio/video it's a non-consideration. I don't care if I have to push an extra 100kb of JS with every page load. It can affect initial page load but once the js is in the browser cache it doesn't create any extra load.

It's pretty universal that a designer will give me css (which presupposes html structure in terms of headings, named divs, etc.) and tell me "make it look like that" or else give me an illustrator doc and tell me "turn this into css and make it look like that."

Are there? I mean you can always roll your own anythng, but it seems like a lot of work for a client app that might have neglible performance advantages over a js browser app. A browser is kind of resource hog but it solves a lot problems and it's already there.

Of course, but 99% of the time an app is going to style the output in some specific way, and it should be easy to change that styling at runtime without having to rebuild the app.

If it's a stand-alone app it still needs html + css to style the output, and that means the overhead of another html parser when the browser already does that. Also a standalone app you have to build your own security and authentication, which are handled more easily + safely in the browser.

The 1976 DePalma is so queer-coded (and such a good horror movie) it's always felt gratutious to remake. Flanagan seemed like a weird/bad choice, glad to hear I'm not missing out on anything.

Like, a JS app I can be pretty confident it's not going to try to steal my credentials or install a trojan or whatever. A separate thin client app I have no such assurances.

Java in the browser sucks, it is way more overhead than JS and keeping JVM up to date is one more thing for the user to do. Most real-world apps are fundamentally a collection of forms and reports, and html + css are the best tools for layout and presentation. Also SECURITY is a big piece.

Yup that's the tradeoff for having .js files which are human readable and editable even though people still run js through an optimizer because e.g. extra whitespace and long variable names will make a script use more resources.

There is also WASM (web assembly) which is exaclty pre-compiled code that runs on the Javascript VM. WASM is what Godot and Unity and GameMaker etc. use when you publish a game for the web.

And like, a lot of the reason JS is clunky is because a web browser is a ginormous piece of software. JS can run server side apps from the command line (node.js) which are super fast. Personally I write server-side apps in C# or Python or PHP but I see why node is attractive to some people.

Right but the tradeoff is a compiled C program only works on a specific CPU + OS. On the web the same code has to run everywhere, so JS has an "engine" that's like a virtual cpu which can runtime-compile JS into something the local device can use. The Java JVM and .NET runtime for C# are similar.

I don't mind keeping the core language light, because a core design consideration of JS was always that it run ok on mobile devices with limited RAM and CPU. But that same design does make the language less accessible.

I mostly don't mind JS but it's maddening that it's the most accessible language: every computer with a web browser has a JS console where you can write and debug programs, but just opening the brower's developer console is not something a casual user should have to or want to look at.

One underappreciated aspect of slow development is that it acts as a natural filter. Mari never made Space Corridor previously, because it did not, in fact, need to be made. It might have been a good personal exercise for learning, but now Mari will learn nothing from it.

I just learned there is a 2020 licensed port of Pac-Man: Championship Edition for the NES, which is quite an achievement. It's scaled down a bit in complexity — it's somewhere in between a port and a demake — but it captures the snappy play and pulsating visuals of the Xbox 360 version.

I really like the driving model, which is the main thing to make or break a racing game for me. It's arcadey in how pit won't let you spin out tooo bad if you mess up, but if you drive decently it feels expressive and responsive and never gets in your way.

Been stuck on Ridge Racer V (PS2) the past few days, I am a sucker for racing games with a good time attack mode. This is my first Ridge Racer, it doesn't have a ton of content but everything there is polished and worthwhile. The tracks are carefully designed yet still feel like real spaces.

I don't think the Dem non-response to Jan 6 gets talked about enough. On Jan 6 the right fucked around and found out they could do whatever they wanted, including running up on the US Capital with guns, without real pushback. It set a precedent for everything since.

I found a GBA color filter in retroarch which desaturates all the colors by about 30%, looks so much better because GBA games (especially older ones) were mastered with overly-bright colors so as to look legible on that screen.
