www.baldurbjarnason.com/2026/05-soft... “Software developers are not okay” by @baldurbjarnason.com
It's also the nature of the agent automation to feel more like delegation to a clueless junior developer than automation, and that changes your relationship to the work.
In woodworking, the power tools didn't reduce the woodworker's emotional investment in what they made. The worker still felt like they'd made that thing out of wood themselves.
Some woodworkers might still use hand tools for a variety of reasons - some of them romantic, some of them, you know, just because it's more fun.
But having a table saw doesn't make you feel like you've asked somebody else to make the shelf, or table, or chair. The nature of automation with Large Language Model tools feels substantially different from prior attempts at automation in coding. It's an abstraction that feels like a delegation, not an automation, and separates you from the output.
That has an effect of making you feel less invested in the output and that takes away much the joy of coding. The flow state is also gone, the sort of focused state of mind that you get into when you're really deep into solving a problem.
On top of the changes to the job itself, the industry itself has changed as well.
There is more uncertainty. People know there are layoffs every quarter. They know they're probably next on the block. Or, if they aren't, they'll be on the block next quarter instead. They know the reasons for dismissal are going to be arbitrary. They know they generally aren't going to be able to do anything to improve their odds.

Marcus Aurelius says u don’t have to have a take on fucking everything 🙌

Things in themselves have no power to extort a verdict from you.

When discussing economic policy it's good to know there are two types of people, so you know which you are talking to. Type 1: I'd love a Porsche, so I want an economy where anyone can have a Porsche. Type 2: I'd love a Porsche, so I want an economy where most people are blocked from getting one.

What is this grave danger that communities in the US seems to be watching out for that other countries don’t experience? Seems like it is competing with China in cameras per sq ft.

Strong disagree. The likely destabilization of the economy and the potential job losses caused by AI in my opinion are most likely to result in a further rise of the far right, lack of focus on climate change, and a general crash in core public services for the working classes.

5. The best way of pushing a book to a kid is to say it isn't suitable. "You won't understand it." "It's rude." "It's far too challenging for someone your age." Then, just leave the book around somewhere they can reach it.

We wanted robots that would relieve us of menial tasks and free us up to be creative. Instead, we’ve ceded our creative selves to robots and ended up with all the washing and cleaning.

I figured out that a) I am often not the smartest guy in the room about the particular thing everyone in the room cares about right now; b) no one in the room will care about <some technical problem> 10 years from now, and for sure I will not; and c) people less smart have solved < problem> before.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

We need to reintroduce the distinction between software company and tech company. a software company makes and sells software and may enjoy some economies of scale a tech company creates a software front-end to labor exploitation, is extraordinarily costly to run and requires regulatory capture

It happens everywhere, but Hollywood is my beat. And that is an industry that *loves* to present the active choices that individuals made over time as inevitabilities that nobody could have possibly prevented. It’s rank, ridiculous nonsense as a PR strategy & we don’t have to buy it, ever!

Susan La Flesche Picotte: the first #NativeAmerican woman to earn a medical degree in the US. Living in an era when Native Americans were denied citizenship & women couldn't vote, she became an indispensable physician & fierce defender of her people's sovereignty. Died #OTD in 1915. #WomenInSTEM 🧵
A black-and-white studio portrait of Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte (1865–1915), the historic reformer celebrated as the first Native American woman to earn a medical degree in the United States. In a bust-up composition against a dark, textured backdrop, she is positioned slightly turned to the side while facing the camera directly. She looks forward with an intelligent, steady, and composed expression, her dark hair neatly swept up away from her face into a soft bun. She wears a Victorian-era garment featuring a high-necked collar made of a contrasting, intricately patterned light fabric with fine floral or geometric motifs. This collared section is framed by a square, dark lace trim on her darker, structured bodice, which has modest pleating and slight puffing at the shoulders. The soft studio lighting emphasizes her prominent cheekbones and the calm, dignified mood of the portrait, embodying her historic legacy as an enduring pioneer of Indigenous health and civil rights.

the only threats "AI" poses to society are when people put it in charge of things that require thought, or crash the economy over it, or destroy the environment to power it. but it's people doing all of those things. AI poses zero threat by itself as it cannot do anything due to not existing

In the age of AI, knowledge is now considered a burden. We’re closing in on the Matrix future.
Screenshot of text that reads: The field of formal verification and deterministic system testing is about to cross a chasm. There are not enough skilled practitioners in the field.
Bug-catching tools, when used in conjunction with adversarial code reviews by an LLM and with language analyzers driven by pre-commit hooks, will be a key component in software factories. They will enable people/agents to deliver reliable software without the burden of having to learn this specialized knowledge.
