For the #Stonehenge area, there is new imagery on Google Earth from August this year showing lots of #archaeology. Pits for missing stones at #Stonehenge plus the barrows just to the SW. Read this thread for more examples ... 1/8

A good time to re-share my piece revealing how a matrifocal Iron Age was not restricted to aDNA science since 2024, but was suspected first by 19thc. ancient historians and subsequently by French and then British archaeologists since the late 20th century: theconversation.com/ancient-dna-...

Ancient DNA study shows women at the centre of societies in iron age Britain – supporting decades of archaeology
Genetics shows that women stayed put in Late Iron Age Dorset, while men moved to other groups.

This is so interesting - both for what it shows about waves of migration around 3,000 BC and that this migration included women.
Screenshot from the Nature paper in the quoted post:
"...Sales's Lot burial, the individual may well have been a first-generation immigrant to Britain, which might explain the special treatment her remains received in the form of deposition in the ancient long barrow. The fact that this apparently venerated individual was female raises questions regarding both the status of women in early metal-using societies and also the extent to which women actively engaged in migration, rather than makes migrating and 'marrying' or at least having children with local women."

At Monkton-up-Wimborne, one of the *coolest sites* in the study, an elaborate Neolithic monument incorporated a family burial within deep chalk-cut features. More than 1500 years later, it was deliberately reused for the burial of an unrelated man with Bell Beaker-associated ancestry. (3/4)

At three sites, Bronze Age newcomers were buried in Neolithic monuments built around a millennium prior. The earliest of these is a Beaker-associated female individual, providing evidence that these early Beaker-related migrations were not exclusively male-associated (2/4)
