#hmsinvincible’s cutwater, raised in 2019 (top left) weighing over 9 tonnes has since been soaked in 15 cubic metres of PEG for 4 years, drained (top right) by @bumaritime.bsky.social now being cleaned b4 being rebuilt and returned to the #NMRN All at our #ArchaeologyCentre in #poole

Today we have been examining the #SSEastfield gun - we like a challenge and this is up there! It's a real mishmash -a French 90 mm 1877 cannon from land married to a 1905 Hotchkiss quick firing gun mount with a recoil system added in 1917. It will need a lot of conservation @bumaritime.bsky.social

A barrel of nails from #AdmiralGardner wrecked off the Goodwins in 1809 has taken a team and some considerable ingenuity to prepare it for transport. Tin foil, then cling film, then plaster of Paris then lifted (by crane off floor to which it was wedded). Now to #Poole @bournemouthuni.bsky.social

@bournemouthuni.bsky.social grad Holly Hughes packs a porthole from #SSMendi. Mendi was carrying men from the South African Native Labour Corps to France and sank in 1917 with huge loss of life. Most of the men drowned.The Mendi has become the symbol for commemoration of their service #navalhistory
