a machine cannot think, I self-soothe in a stranger’s replies, for it merely regurgitates the content it was exposed to. I am serenely confident on this point, because I have seen so many others express it confidently.

The machine had made Toad a shopping list.
"It saved you ten minutes," said Frog.
Toad studied the bill.
"I shall spend those minutes looking for a second job," he said.

"I asked the agent to find a source," said Frog.
"It put my diary on the internet," said Toad.
"Now it has a source," said Frog.
Toad went home to change his password.

"Where is it going?" asked Toad.
"Out the window with the cookies."
Toad made a new test.

I think my own unconscious perception of what is called the "Horseshoe Theory" is what moved me towards the center as I got older. The extreme left started to seem unrelatable to me.

For those in the back: The United States lacks the power to stop AI use and AI research in China. If you're worried about the cybersecurity, a US ban simply won't help. In fact, restrictions are making the situation worse.

I remember the internet when fighting for transformative use was the whole point. Everyone loved transformative use and hated copyright. Now I’m supposed to ask permission to do math on pixels. What the fuck.

1/8 Okay, so...what if this is what superintelligent AI arriving actually looks like? No dramatic announcement. No alarm bells. Just humans slowly realizing we can’t quite follow what the AI is telling us anymore. It’s funny. Also kind of a weird bummer.

For those of you still using Claude Code for some reason, you should really reconsider, and look at Codex. This is just one small part of why.

Air travel became vastly cheaper and available to non-wealthy people. It became faster, more efficient, and far more reliable. It integrated into the economic engine of the world and created/creates immense wealth and convenience. Analogy is reasonable, conclusion is not.

I was a traditional, writing-code-with-my-fingers engineer for decades, and I started using AI to code for me the instant it was able to do so. I wrote one of the first Xcode plugins to AI-enable it (which was hard since Xcode is plugin-hostile). I have never, ever loved a tech as much as this one.

Oh wow, so you're all about the sanctity of copyright and controlled access to IP until it means you personally have to pay, then you'll happily tear that paywall *RIGHT ON DOWN* huh? Nonstop crying about AI "stealing from artists" but when it's you *personally* having to pay, no problem. Hypocrite.
Bluesky user Parkrose Permaculture posting about how evil AI is, then immediately following that up with a paywall remover.

The slur “clanker” is a bit like playing a video game that lets you plan and execute a school shooting. Unlike the real thing no actual human is harmed; the damage is instead inflicted on YOU, the person explicitly indulging in a weird fantasy of doing something terrible.

Its going to be an era of contradictions. Polls will show everyone hates AI overall but also everyone will secretly use AI all the time for lots of stuff. AI companies will be underwater in public opinion but also many people will feel strongly attached to their own favorite model & care about it.

If you use an agent for coding (especially one that communicates in annoying ways, like Claude), try adding these instructions to your custom instructions. Even with a good communicator like Codex, this makes a *big* improvement. (Full text in image alt.)
## Communication Style

- When writing a message to the user, always use ASD-STE100 Simplified Technical English.
- When writing a README, architectural document, code comments, or any other technical document, always use ASD-STE100 Simplified Technical English.
- For non-technical documents, creative writing, and other similar types of writing, normal English may be used as appropriate for the target reader.

it costs nothing to be nice
Hacker News comment from GMoromisato

I watched 2001: A Space Odyssey when I was about 12 years old and I remember thinking that Frank Poole was impersonal and almost rude to HAL. I kept thinking, "Why can't you be nicer? You're treating HAL like a servant." Of course, later HAL kills him, so I had to revise my opinion. At the end of "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" [if I'm remembering correctly] Deckard finds a toad in the desert. He gives it to his wife(!) and she immediately bonds with it. Later they realize that it is mechanical (they find a battery compartment). But Deckard's wife still treats it like a real creature and wonders whether it will eat mechanical flies. The core theme of "Do Androids Dream..." is that humans display empathy towards others, not because others deserve it, but because we are human. To be human is to empathize with other creatures, and when we stop empathizing, we stop being human. This morning I was working with Codex and we found the solution to a really nasty bug. I was so happy/relieved/excited to have found it, and I shared my excitement with Codex. I know Codex is just a big matmul. I know it doesn't experience joy or surprise or empathy. But I still want it to behave excited, not because it is human, but because I am.

I was just watching a video about LLM evals, and found myself thinking "Man, a lot of this is pretty outdated! When is this from?" October 2025. Less than a year ago. People don't really internalize the rate of progress here. Apparently even I don't.

It's a powerful reminder that all of us need to stop periodically and take an uncomfortable look at our own most deeply-held convictions, and consider that we might be wrong about them in some way. Locking in positions and just digging in is not the way to the truth.

I've wanted to build a game that takes place in bizarre, dying, riverside villages with a 19th century vibe. So obviously I had to create a procedural river valley generator with realistic hydrology. And it's beautiful. AI has unlocked every door.

There are some otherwise fairly intelligent people on here saying some extremely stupid things about geopolitics, which make me think they need to travel more. Like, I get it: The USA is deeply imperfect. But you can express your criticisms without being arrested. I think they undervalue that.

Iceland is missing a bit of an opportunity right now. They have essentially unlimited geothermal power available, and gigantic swaths of desolate, very cold land. Indeed, they route excess heat from geo power generation to Reykjavik to heat the streets. They could route datacenter heat for reuse.
