just wrapped up day 3 of working on a simple "fix the typing in these files" ticket that ended up being a +1100/-1100 line PR because the types were either completely wrong or "any" everywhere so i ALSO had to fix tons of ancient downstream type-unsafe code. this was not the plan lol
