Meat Matters, issue #2: Once alt meats reach price and taste parity, their other benefits (food safety, climate, global health, animal protection) can stand out. Plus, we'll have allies in the meat industry and governments. Check it out at MeatMatters.substack.com Thanks!

Here's how I see it: Shifting from beef to chicken or fish is, for the climate, like switching from a massive private plane to a slightly smaller private plane (or like shifting from a Hummer to a massive SUV). Better? Sure. Good? No. Find out more in my new book Meat, see MeatBook(dot)org.

4) at 50% global adoption, alternative proteins could avoid an estimated 5–6.3 billion metric tons of emissions annually—and spare roughly 640–650 million hectares of land. (5b tonnes = 5x the emissions of all air travel globally.)

3) plant-based chicken produces one-tenth the climate impact of the conventional chicken and requires about one-fifth of the land.

Bruce Friedrich @brucefriedrich.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
2) it requires roughly 900 feed calories to produce 100 calories of chicken (and 800 for farmed fish). * Think about that: Pretty much everyone cares about food waste: ~30 calories wasted for every 100 calories produced. * But for chicken and fish, 700-800 calories are wasted for every 100 produced.

🌍 Beef is bad for the climate, obviously. But is shifting from beef to chicken or fish something we should encourage? Consider: 1) soy is the #2 driver of deforestation, and ~80% of that soy is fed to chickens, pigs, and farmed fish. (About .5%, so 1/200, is fed to beef cattle).

Done well, this transition can also be a win for workers and communities... Plant-based and cultivated meat facilities can look much more like modern food manufacturing—or breweries for meat: cleaner, safer, and welcome sources of good jobs. That is a food system worth building.”

Finished reading Meat by @brucefriedrich.bsky.social yesterday. A great read about the future of cultivated and plant based meats. Given the optimism of cultivated meat scientists, it's made me a lot more optimistic that they will reach price parity with animal meats sooner than I had expected.

I think your "vehicles are..." is overestimating buses, cars, and light trucks; a LOT of the vehicle emissions come from 18-wheelers, etc. Acc to IIASA, every 10% reduction = ~1.3 Gt of climate benefit, which is roughly what a total shift to electric cars, buses, and light trucks would do.
