Possibly my least fav AI "enthusiast" is the speculative fiction writer or futurist who has created a brand of riding the next wave and who reflexively engages with AI so they can look like they're hip to the cool, so to speak.

This is exactly the point. And, with guardrails in place would I read AI in student work? No. Because if I wanted to read robot writing, I’d do that. If I’m reading a student paper I want all of the student’s work, even the silly bits and the wonky grammar.

Tarot is definitely more reliable than AI. It doesn’t predict the future, doesn’t plagiarize or guess, and you have to know how to talk to your deck in order to understand it.

How Drexel can even call themselves a university after running the Academy of Natural Sciences so far into the red they insist they have to close it to the public!? It’s a 200 year old institution. It doesn’t need to be profitable, it needs to be sustained and accessible.

I wonder if pivoting to including more "personal reaction" type essays in assignments would encourage students to use less AI... But in the past students have just generated answers from a chatbot for questions as simple as "which was your favorite story this semester" so then again I'm not sure.

Let My Right Hand Forget
For my students who study WWII history

Today my student asked me how to ask a question
If our elders will not tell us what happened, how
Do we seek that knowledge they hold in deep dark
Places of their memories, how do we avoid shock
At their trauma. Is comfort even possible, if I am
Not clever enough to remember all that has never been
Explained to me? Earnestly, my student asks
About the dark places. Earnestly, I think: there is
No forgetting, only the search for knowledge.
