Our plan is to double down on fossil fuel productions, naturally! But don’t worry, we’ll use the royalties from oil and gas to fund the green transition. 🙄

This really is bleak. So much investment that could have gone into the energy transition is being directed *again* to prop up the fossil fuel industry.

' McKibben figured it out over a decade ago, rather famous essay in The Rolling Stone. Basically comes down to: What happens to $30 trillion of stranded assets? That people's pensions depend on? Hint -- it's not an engineering problem -- or it would have been solved decades ago.... 😐

Q: What is the total size of subsidies to the suburbs? A: The CAP is basically right in the tax data, it's about $138m/year. One you net that out, you can calculate geographic subsidies with the city's cost model, which gives ~$95m/year for a total of $233m/year. Here are some maps:
A map of Halifax with neighbourhoods shaded in reds and greens based on whether they on net pay extra or receive subsidies from the capped assessment program. LNG Canada Phase 2 would double output to 30 million tonnes a year, while global gas demand falls and a glut approaches. And they want to expand before proving Phase 1 is safe: its flaring already exceeds B.C. permits. Real leadership means scaling up clean energy, not doubling down fracked gas.

I don't love dunking on folks but it's so fucking funny to me that Trump was convicted of 34 felonies 2 years ago, faced no punishment, and went on to win the presidency a second time and journalists are still like, "hmm, I have an inkling that maybe he believes he's above the law for some reason."
Post from NYT reporter Eric Lipton

"What an odd moment in United States history.

A U.S. president is running an overtly political campaign advertisement, right before midterm elections, paid for by the U.S. government.

Trump appears to believe he is immune from any kind of legal limit."

We can’t control every reaction to change. We can choose what vision we put into the world: positive rather than punitive, inclusive rather than exclusionary, and optimistic rather than fearful. One that imagines cities not just for the few who are loudest today, but for the many to enjoy tomorrow.🔚

Many don’t have the time, confidence or privilege to endlessly argue about urban policy online: Kids who want to move independently. Older adults who want to stay connected. Those with disabilities who need streets to work. Caregivers carrying groceries. Low-income residents who can’t afford a car.

We can handle the criticism, but this was an poignant reminder: When you change the status quo, there is always a group who feel change is being done to them, rather than for everyone. And the loudest voices online aren’t representative of those who have most to gain from a different kind of city.

It was also, sadly, a reminder of how emotionally charged the conversation about changing streets can become; and that for some, the mere hint of a shift toward equity feels like oppression. So for a couple of days, we had to step offline while our inboxes and replies were flooded with vitriol.

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.
