Yes, this rural area should definitely be governed by the capital city. /s - I am not against some sort of municipal reorg but anything that puts working farms under the umbrella of the city is just a non-starter. Victoria doesn’t need to waste time on agriculture policy.

11. Climate. It’s not hard to see why cities have a huge role to play in the climate/energy crisis ahead of us. People who live in cities use fewer resources and generate more economic output. We need to allow more people to live in cities, especially walkable ones with mild climate like Victoria.

Carbon footprint of people living in New York area. Green = lower CO2 emissions per person, orange+red = higher CO2 emissions per person. Manhattan, Brooklyn, and The Bronx, and parts of New Jersey are some of the ‘greenest’ places anywhere in North America.

6. Cont’d. The cost of travel needs to be factored into thinking about housing, and one of our city councillors has outlined it clearly on his blog that when housing + transport are considered together, Victoria is less expensive than Saanich and other suburbs.

6. Let’s talk about “regional transportation” & one of my all-time favourite urbanism cartoons. When people complain about ‘transportation integration’ what they want is this: more lanes and parking for more cars. Victoria’s made big strides developing a walkable city, I don’t want to give that up.

Steady climb with Brent crude above $100/bbl, but Heating Oil/Diesel is smashing new highs just in time for N. Hemisphere harvest season and heating oil refills… I wonder if we’re going to see how ‘efficient’ markets are at choosing economic sectors that get fuel very soon.

Heating oil / diesel at $4.779… things going to get weird, fast.
