Some of you have forgotten that only three years ago you were perfectly capable of writing an essay, writing a eulogy, telling a bedtime story to a child, and it should worry you that powerful companies have convinced us we can’t do things we’ve been doing for 5,000 years.

Something that has troubled me over and over in these AI years is how we seem to need to redraw every line to accommodate AI. It is possible for writing to have value for thinking and for oral exams and discussions to have value. We don't need to remake the world to eliminate writing/5

The literacy crisis is not just referring to people's ability to literally read and write. It's also people's inability to read for context. I've been a public educator for over 20 years and I have never, ever seen it this bad.

we've never had much reason to articulate this before a.i., but a reason we enjoy literature, art, music, etc. is that we know it is one human mind trying to express something fundamentally human and otherwise inexpressible to another human mind

Super jazzed to start the first in-class discussion of the novel Feed by M.T. Anderson with my classes. Let's go!
From the novel Feed by M.T. Anderson: "People were really excited when they first came out with feeds. It was all da da da, this big educational thing, da da da, your child will have the advantage, encyclopedias at their fingertips, closer than their fingertips, etc. That’s one of the great things about the feed — that you can be supersmart without ever working. Everyone is supersmart now. You can look things up automatic, like science and history, like if you want to know which battles of the Civil War George Washington fought in and shit."From the novel Feed by M.T. Anderson: "Of course, everyone is like, da da da, evil corporations, oh they’re so bad, we all say that, and we all know they control everything. I mean, it’s not great, because who knows what evil shit they’re up to. Everyone feels bad about that. But they’re the only way to get all this stuff, and it’s no good getting pissy about it, because they’re still going to control everything whether you like it or not. Plus, they keep like everyone in the world employed, so it’s not like we could do without them. And it’s really great to know everything about everything whenever we want, to have it just like, in our brain, just sitting there."

You have to make making culture a priority. mattdpearce.substack.com/p/how-should...
What do we lose when software is our greatest cultural export? Doesn't it bother you that Al has made the signs in your neighborhood uglier and removed the quirks of human idiosyncrasy in the handwritten note stuck in the storefront window? Wasn't it better that people could choose whether to see the silly Wile E. Coyote movie instead of leaving a finished project in the vault to die in tax write-off purgatory?
Weren't you amazed to learn that the Circe scene in Christopher Nolan's "Odyssey" was shot completely in-camera, with prosthetics and no CGI? Aren't there different, more difficult stories out there that also deserve to get told, and to also get told well?
Don't people work hard enough and suffer too much not to deserve, in their short lives, to encounter beautiful and well made things?

This is one of those skills that we expect graduate students to pick up but rarely teach explicitly. But basically, most (all?) academics learn to read in a way that lets you extract what you need from a text as quickly as possible, because we have to process a lot of text as part of our jobs.

There is no gray area on Scrooge. He is the most explicitly caricatured figure in all of Dickens. A Sistine Chapel level finely filigreed precise depiction of every miserly trait boiled down to an aromatic reduction. A Platonic ideal of the form.
