Sobering but also reinforces that solving any of these problems is going to be structural. As long as emphasis is on grades and doing as much as possible, as long as universities call for "embracing" AI, as long as assessment trumps learning, it's going to be hard to solve this even as many/1
He understands why this shift has happened. AI use is “very terrible” at Penn, he said. It’s not just blatant cheating that’s a problem. Bringing assignments back into class helps, but students “are still going to use AI to plan out what they’re going to write, and they’re still going to use AI to summarize the readings they’re supposed to do at home,” he said. “I’m not saying every student is like this, but [in-class work] is a Band-Aid basically to a much larger problem, because critical thinking is still largely being outsourced.”

Pedersen said he has been as guilty as his classmates of overrelying on AI. He recalls not paying attention in an introductory course, asking AI to create summaries of lectures and notes, then bombing a test. Last year, in a course on European politics and institutions that he took while studying abroad, students were given 10 essay prompts in advance of the in-class final exam and told they would have to respond to three. Feeling overwhelmed by the number of readings he had to keep track of and running out of time, he turned to AI to do much of the preparation. He received an A.

Some of you have forgotten that only three years ago you were perfectly capable of writing an essay, writing a eulogy, telling a bedtime story to a child, and it should worry you that powerful companies have convinced us we can’t do things we’ve been doing for 5,000 years.

Something that has troubled me over and over in these AI years is how we seem to need to redraw every line to accommodate AI. It is possible for writing to have value for thinking and for oral exams and discussions to have value. We don't need to remake the world to eliminate writing/5

The literacy crisis is not just referring to people's ability to literally read and write. It's also people's inability to read for context. I've been a public educator for over 20 years and I have never, ever seen it this bad.

we've never had much reason to articulate this before a.i., but a reason we enjoy literature, art, music, etc. is that we know it is one human mind trying to express something fundamentally human and otherwise inexpressible to another human mind

Super jazzed to start the first in-class discussion of the novel Feed by M.T. Anderson with my classes. Let's go!
From the novel Feed by M.T. Anderson: "People were really excited when they first came out with feeds. It was all da da da, this big educational thing, da da da, your child will have the advantage, encyclopedias at their fingertips, closer than their fingertips, etc. That’s one of the great things about the feed — that you can be supersmart without ever working. Everyone is supersmart now. You can look things up automatic, like science and history, like if you want to know which battles of the Civil War George Washington fought in and shit."From the novel Feed by M.T. Anderson: "Of course, everyone is like, da da da, evil corporations, oh they’re so bad, we all say that, and we all know they control everything. I mean, it’s not great, because who knows what evil shit they’re up to. Everyone feels bad about that. But they’re the only way to get all this stuff, and it’s no good getting pissy about it, because they’re still going to control everything whether you like it or not. Plus, they keep like everyone in the world employed, so it’s not like we could do without them. And it’s really great to know everything about everything whenever we want, to have it just like, in our brain, just sitting there."

I can clarify a bit. In my class students write an Annotated Bib before a final paper, and I only do this for the Ann. Bib. Part of my reasoning is that that I'm helping them learn how to read difficult sources, and this is a way to check/help them learn how to accurately quote/paraphrase/summarize.

I do a version of this where they turn in screenshots of highlighted portions of their sources used. I also click on every doi or url in their citations to make sure the source matches what they say it is, and increased the # of points correct citations are worth. It. is. so. much. work. But 🤷

You have to make making culture a priority. mattdpearce.substack.com/p/how-should...
What do we lose when software is our greatest cultural export? Doesn't it bother you that Al has made the signs in your neighborhood uglier and removed the quirks of human idiosyncrasy in the handwritten note stuck in the storefront window? Wasn't it better that people could choose whether to see the silly Wile E. Coyote movie instead of leaving a finished project in the vault to die in tax write-off purgatory?
Weren't you amazed to learn that the Circe scene in Christopher Nolan's "Odyssey" was shot completely in-camera, with prosthetics and no CGI? Aren't there different, more difficult stories out there that also deserve to get told, and to also get told well?
Don't people work hard enough and suffer too much not to deserve, in their short lives, to encounter beautiful and well made things?

You forgot the next part, which (imo) is equally as interesting/prescient: (teaching this book in a couple of weeks, and students always want to talk about this part).
Excerpt from Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five that reads:
"If you know this," said Billy, "isn't there some way you can prevent it? Can't you keep the pilot from pressing the button?"
"He has always pressed it, and he always will. We always let him and we always will let him. The moment is structured that way."

It's bleak. I had this problem in a class last semester. My students do reading posts the night before discussion and it was mostly surface-level stuff on the exact same parts and discussion would die after 20 min. I would ask about different parts and get silence even after reading it out loud.

This is one of those skills that we expect graduate students to pick up but rarely teach explicitly. But basically, most (all?) academics learn to read in a way that lets you extract what you need from a text as quickly as possible, because we have to process a lot of text as part of our jobs.

There is no gray area on Scrooge. He is the most explicitly caricatured figure in all of Dickens. A Sistine Chapel level finely filigreed precise depiction of every miserly trait boiled down to an aromatic reduction. A Platonic ideal of the form.
