I don’t have a fancy lesson I delivered about the #SuperBowlHalftimeShow Before I showed it, I instructed my students to write down three words and document when they noticed them: •imagery •symbolism •message We watched once all the way through, then we broke down where my students noted. +

A revelation that hit me during my conversation w/ @pernille.bsky.social is the tension & pressure of training American teachers to be superheroes needed to rescue kids from failing economic systems while ignoring those systemic failures. The demand to be superhuman is ultimately dehumanizing.

DEI is not gone just because they disband a funky lil program or department. Keep breathing life into inclusion and equity. We have to stop waiting for “them” to give us permission to see the humanity in others.

It's wild that the Bloom study about 1:1 tutoring has been around for over 40 years, teachers have been advocating for increased staff & small class sizes the entire time, yet it's re-emerged as the TechBro mantra to answer education inequality & "democratization" with AI tutors. 😵‍💫

So deeply not kidding when I say that the current paradigm of "Gen AI" is doing deep, lasting harm to our ability to make knowledge, meaning, & truth w/ each other. Like… it's really fucking us up & if we don't stop it soon we're gonna see a kind of negative chaos frankly unimaginable to most ppl 👍🏾
screenshot of a Tumblr post from user ecofear yelling "what is HAPPENING" in response to a screenshot of a quotetweet from user @Ovichknox reading "this is so scary to me. i recommended a book to a friend recently and she came back to me a day later saying it was really good and i asked if she finished it already and she said "yeah i got chatgpt to summarise each chapter into 3 paragraphs to it was easy to read"
which is replying to a tweet from @alz_zyd reading "Personally, I read a bunch of classics in high register in college. I guess it was fun. I recently ChatGPT'd Aristotle into readable English, finished it around 5x as fast as a translation, and felt l got the main gist of things. idk does the pain incurred…"

Followed by a a reblog from tumblr use moonglade-poetess reading "Hey guys, with so much love, and as someone with an actual English degree:

Please just use Sparknotes if you're going to do this. I get it. I do. But chatgpt or other genAl shit doesn't actually know what's important for you to know, and in some cases it might fully make shit up. Use sparknotes. Failing that, talk to someone who did read it. I'm begging.

Hello new followers! Here's one of my favorite older comics.
A four-panel comic called Instinct is Weird. In panel 1, a yellow warbler looks at a beautiful nest in a shrub and says "I made this for some reason". In panel 2, there are five eggs in the nest and she says "these are my smooth round children". In panel 3 an egg has hatched into a yelling hatchling, and she says "Oh no now it's loud". In panel 4 she looks distressed as five hatchlings now fill the nest, begging for food, and she says "help".

One thing the TikTok ban discourse has not included is that many TikTok creators privately do not like TikTok, which of course they’re not saying because none of us want it banned. It’s a brutal creative ecosystem that extracts from creators until they burnout and then they are replaced.

David Lynch gave us the language we needed to better articulate the indescribable strangeness of our shared reality. “Lynchian” is so overused because it’s a viscerally understandable word without any known synonyms. I can’t imagine a more beautiful artistic legacy than that.

Neil Postman’s Seven Question are useful here (Neil was on my dissertation committee):
1. What is the problem to which technology claims to be a solution?

2. Whose problem is it?

3. What new problems will be created because of solving an old one?

4. Which people and institutions will be most harmed?

5. What changes in language are being promoted?

6. What shifts in economic and political power are likely to result?

7. What alternative media might be made from a technology?

A passage from the text All About Love by bell hooks explaining that Fear impedes love, but perfect love casts out fear. A further explanation from bell hooks, culminating in the statement, "The choice to love is a choice to connect - to find ourselves in the other."

Reading through Foucault's ''Birth of The Clinic'' for this r&r, really liked this chunk. Think it'd be a fun essay prompt for students in a #medicalsociology / pre-med sociology class.
"The first task of the doctor is therefore political: the struggle against disease must begin with a war against bad government. Man will be totally and definitively cured only if he is first liberated: 'Who, then, should denounce tyrants to mankind if not the doctors, who make man their sole study, and who, each day, in the homes of poor and rich, among ordinary citizens and among the highest in a the land, in cottage and mansion, contemplate the human miseries that have no other origin but tyranny and slavery?"
