Wonderful definition of metaphor from Jeffrey Jerome Cohen: “A conveyance device that is at once linguistic, story-laden, thingly, and agentic, a metaphor is an ontological sliding, a tectonic veer, materiality coming in and out of figure, ‘matterphor.’” (Stone, p. 4)

More on the Vanderbilt report. In “The Nature of the Problem” section, the authors claim that “liberal skew in the professoriat” plays a role in “discouraging full participation in academia on the part of students who find themselves culturally and politically alienated from their professors.”

“The belief that every field in the humanities is secretly controlled by social justice warriors has always been a false conspiracy theory, but to make these fantastical claims during the middle of a war against the humanities is a particularly dangerous delusion.”

On this #memorialday, thinking of children who have lost parents, parents who have lost children, and all who have lost homelands. Matthew Arnold, closing lines of “Dover Beach,” c.1851 #everynightapoem
Ah, love, let us be true
To one another! for the world, which seems To lie before us like a land of dreams, So various, so beautiful, so new,
Hath really neither joy, nor love, nor light, Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain;
And we are here as on a darkling plain
Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight,
Where ignorant armies clash by night.

I grew up not so far from Walden Pond: my mom would pack the kids into the car to take them there and swim on hot summer days. Only later did I realize why the pond matters -- and in high school I became a Thoreau fan after my 10th grade English teacher told us the book Walden had ruined his life
