A bit witchy for October.
Drawing of a woman in a red, hooded cloak, holding a knobbly, carved staff in the crook of her elbow. A strong wind is blowing and the long hood and cloak are streaming behind her as she looks out of frame.

Drawing of several hands in various gestures. Most of the hands are white lines on a black background, but one hand is drawn with pale, greyish skin tone. Multiple hands drawn in various poses. The knuckles are reddened and the hands overlap each other in a darkened space.

An art student reached out with 3 questions about working in the industry. Normally I don't have time to answer these kinds of questionnaires, but I slipped back into teacher-mode and figured I might as well share them with everyone else.
How do you create the most opportunities for yourself as an artist?

The old adage is that "You need to be in the right place at the right time" for opportunities to happen, but that also means you need to be at the intersection of those places and times for people to discover your work.

The more places and times you can create - by building your skills, posting work online, going to events, interacting with other people in a positive way - the more chances that one of them is the right one that leads to bigger and better things, in that moment or later on in your creative career. What drives you to pursue a creative career, despite its challenges?

I love building stories and entertaining people. Working in comics has been the most viable outlet for that, but I've also done work in animation, illustration, teaching, games and tabletop RPGs that scratches that same itch.

The thrill I get from engaging with people - the other creators I'm collaborating with or an audience that enjoys the work - charges my creative batteries and keeps me striving to learn more and make more. That act of creating and engaging people drives me forward through each new project. What's something you had to learn the hard way on your journey?

There's no perfect job waiting for you in this industry and, even if people help you out, you'll still need to prove your worth and carve out your own spot, because there are so many more people who want to create art/stories as a career than there are full-time lucrative positions available.

If you're fortunate enough to be part of a team, respect their time, ideas and hard work. If you consistently do that, you'll build a strong reputation that lasts and, over the long haul, surround yourself with like-minded people who you'll want to keep working and growing with throughout your career.

One thing about “breaking into comics” is that unless you mean “I want to be so famous I never need to look for a gif and/or have full autonomy to do whatever I want and be paid for it,” you can do it right now. Just draw a comic and print it out. Get a table at a small local comic fest.

I fucking love Van Eyck. They have a replica of the Ghent Altar piece in its original side chapel so you can see how much they'd painted it for exactly that spot. Adored pointing out the way the light falls to visitors when I was a tour guide there. I didn't catch the reflection in the 3 mm gem 🤯
the angels from the Ghent altar piece with a close up of one of the gems. with the text overlaid 'the gem on this singing angel is barely 3mm wide. Inside it, Van Eyck painted the real chapel window exactly as it reflected from where the painting once hung'

To our dismay, the artist and author Marjane Satrapi has passed away. As she wrote, ordinary Americans and Iranians have more in common with each other than we do with either of our governments, which have far too much in common with each other. We honor her memory and oppose the war.

NO WAR WITH IRAN!
The world is not divided into countries. The world is not divided between East and West.
You are American, I am Iranian, we don’t know each other, but we talk together
& we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you
& your government is much bigger than the difference
between you & me.
And the difference between me
& my government is much bigger
than the difference
between me & you.
And our governments are very much the same...

I forgot to share this magnificent illustration in May but heck, everything written on that garland is just 👌👌✊✊ and as relevant as it was in 1895.
A totally badass illustration by Walter Crane entitled "A Garland for May Day 1895" featuring a woman wearing a winged Phrygian/liberty cap wearing and holding aloft a giant laurel wreath with a ribbon wrapped around it. Upon the ribbon is written: No people can be free while dependent for their bread - the plough is a better backbone than the factroy - no child toilers - production for use not for profit - solidarity of labour - the cause of labour is the hope of the world - socialism means the most helpful and happy life for all - a common wealth when wealth is common - art and enjoyment for all - hope in work and joy in leisure - cooperation and emulation not competition - shorten working day and lengthen life - england should feed her own people - the land for the people

a little tiny microscopic dragon, rotifers passing by. I've spent a lot of time peering down a microscope in the last few years, enjoyed taking inspiration from the real tiny organisms to make one of my own.
Watercolour and pencil illustration of a microscopic dragon sitting on a plant root. It's body is transparent and it has two rounded wings covered in beating cilia hairs. It has a long neck and blunt snout with long whiskers. Inside its neck, large jaws are visible and it has tiny black eyes.

The dragon has large claws on its feet, like a water bear, and a long segmented tail hangs down and splitting into a fork at the end. From the root, golden diatoms are growing, and sun animalcules creep along it as a group of rotifers swims past.
