This Paramount-Skydance merger deal is awful! Allowing this merger to go through with the weakest of weak sauce “deals" one could imagine is an incredibly devastating betrayal. One man will now control almost inconceivable amounts of news, film, TV, and other programming.

The silver lining I am finding in CA settling with Paramount is that I no longer need to cite that suit in my qualified defense of CA in the face of backdooring in KOSA with the Meta settlement.

By the time this merger ruins HBO, destroys WB, gets 5,000 people fired, moves production overseas, and guts the quality of the movies the new studio makes, most people will have forgotten how fast the AGs caved and how little they got in this deal. Writers will not.

California AG Rob Bonta Caves, Paramount Merger To Proceed With Flimsy Conditions
California AG Rob Bonta has caved to what was a relentless, bipartisan pressure campaign to settle the 12 state antitrust lawsuit against Paramount. The AGs sued Paramount last July, arguing (correctly) that the $111 billion deal would largely be anti-competitive, resulting in mass layoffs as the even bigger Larry Ellison-owned company forces labor and consumers...

Paramount Caught Using ‘Astroturf’ Group To Drum Up Fake Support For Merger
We've well established how the $111 billion Paramount and Warner Brothers merger is terrible for labor, creatives, consumers, and markets. Surveilling children, taking away their access to community, information, third spaces, and suicide prevention resources is a *really* weird approach to child safety.
Post on LinkedIn from the United Nations Human Rights Account that says "Children should have to wait for a lawsuit to be safe online. The design changes that Meta has now agreed to implement on its social media apps align with what my Office has been calling for. But we're not there yet.

Safe design should be applied across the industry. Governments need to step up rather than wait for courts and companies to act."

This really sums up why we need internet anonymity.
So who, exactly is anonymity for?

It's for the teenage girl who lost her mother when she was young, just got her period for the first time, and is to embarrassed to meet with a school nurse.

It's for the 45-year-old who hasn't drunk in years but is realizing that he's struggling with his sobriety and needs to talk privately about it.

It's for a woman coming to terms with the fact her boyfriend is abusive and figuring out how to get away from him without his knowledge.

It's for a Chinese immigrant who wants to speak about human rights abuses he witnessed at home without his family in Beijing paying the price for his words or repression following him abroad.

It's for a factory worker looking for resources about how to report unsafe conditions without losing his job.

It's for a college freshman who needs to talk about being gay without fearing his family will learn of it before he's ready to tell them.

It's for a grandmother who just received a breast cancer diagnosis and wants to discreetly discuss her anxiety about a mastectomy,

It's for a priest dealing with depression who doesn't know how to manage his feelings of emptiness amidst his duties to his parish.

It's for anyone who has ever experienced a fear, thought, idea or emotion that need to express but aren't ready to share with colleagues, family, friends, or acquaintances or authority figures.

1) Pretextual device searches are possible when there aren't meaningful limits on law enforcement's ability to search devices at the border 2) If we go forward with age-gating/deanonymizing the web, there's going to be much less need for the govt to go after devices
