In the 1950s, the CSIRO imported Bufo marinus, the Cane Toad, to northern Australia in hope they would eradicate Cane Beetles, the main pest of sugar cane. Sadly, this was our biggest ecological disaster after the introduction of the rabbit. But now there's hope. www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GF7...
Red arrows point to the distinguishing features of a golden coloured cane toad against a black background.

Following the apparent success of the cane toad in eating the beetles threatening the sugarcane plantations of Puerto Rico, Hawaiʻi and the Philippines, a strong push was made for the cane toad to be released in Australia to negate the pests ravaging the Queensland cane fields. As a result, 102 toads were collected from Hawaiʻi and brought to Australia. Queensland's sugar scientists released the toad into cane fields in August 1935. After this initial release, the Commonwealth Department of Health decided to ban future introductions until a study was conducted into the feeding habits of the toad. The study was completed in 1936 and the ban lifted, and large-scale releases were undertaken; by March 1937, 62,000 toadlets had been released into the wild. The toads became firmly established in Queensland, increasing exponentially in number and extending their range into the Northern Territory and New South Wales. In 2010, one was found on the far western coast in Broome, Western Australia.
A National Parks ranger holds the most recently found largest can toad, dubbed 'Toadzilla'.

The cane toad has been linked to the to decreases in northern quolls in some parts of Australia, as they are poisoned by the Bufotoxin these toads emit from their huge parotid glands behind their eyes.

The toad was generally unsuccessful in reducing the targeted grey-backed cane beetles in part because the cane fields provided insufficient shelter for the predators during the day, and in part because the beetles live at the tops of sugar cane—and cane toads which are terrestrial, are not good climbers.

Since its original introduction, the cane toad has had a particularly marked effect on Australian biodiversity. The population of a number of native predatory reptiles has declined, such as the varanid lizards; the land snakes Pseudechis australis and Acanthophis antarcticus; and the freshwater crocodile species Crocodylus johnstoni.

In contrast, the population of the agamid lizard Lophognathus gilberti—known to be a prey item of V. panoptes—has increased due to their decline via cane toad poisoning. Meat ants are able to kill cane toads.

The cane toad has also been linked to decreases in northern quolls in the southern region of Kakadu National Park and even their local extinction.A National Parks ranger in jeans and black gumboots holds the most recently found largest cane toad, dubbed 'Toadzilla'.

The cane toad has poison glands, and the tadpoles are highly toxic to most animals if ingested. Its toxic skin can kill many animals, both wild and domesticated, and cane toads are particularly dangerous to dogs. Because of its voracious appetite, the cane toad has been introduced to many regions of the Pacific and the Caribbean islands as a method of agricultural pest control.

The cane toad is now considered a pest and an invasive species in many of its introduced regions. The 1988 film Cane Toads: An Unnatural History documented the trials and tribulations of the introduction of cane toads in Australia.

The skin of the adult cane toad is toxic, as well as the enlarged parotoid glands behind the eyes, and other glands across its back.

Components of bufotoxin are toxic to many animals; even human deaths have been recorded due to the consumption of cane toads. Dogs are especially prone to be poisoned by licking or biting toads. Pets showing excessive drooling, extremely red gums, head-shaking, crying, loss of coordination, and/or convulsions require immediate veterinary attention.

Bufotenin, one of the chemicals excreted by the cane toad, is classified as a schedule 9 drug under Australian law, alongside heroin and LSD.[53] The effects of bufotenin are thought to be similar to those of mild poisoning; the stimulation, which includes mild hallucinations, lasts less than an hour. As the cane toad excretes bufotenin in small amounts, and other toxins in relatively large quantities, toad licking could result in serious illness or death.

In addition to releasing toxin, the cane toad is capable of inflating its lungs, puffing up, and lifting its body off the ground to appear taller and larger to a potential predator.

We are celebrating our 🇨🇦Thanksgiving tomorrow & I love a make ahead dish! Those who loathe brussel sprouts love this, for real It's a great dish if you want to: 1. increase your waistline 2. clog an artery or two 3. go to sleep with a smile It's so flavourful & feels like a hug Recipe in ALT
Sorry...my recipes are not too specific (massive understatement)

Lots of brussel sprouts
A whole pack of bacon (diced)
1 shallot (diced)
Butter (who can have enough butter?!)
Cream (2 cups/.5 liters)
Gorgonzola cheese (one pack of your fav)

Halve the brussel sprouts and par boil for 10 min. Drain & set aside

In a cast iron (or whatever) fry pan cook the shallot in butter
Add the bacon & cook till crispy.
Add the brussels to the bacon mix & stir thoroughly
Then slowly add the cream at a med heat
reduce, reduce, reduce
After about 15 minutes (or more🤷‍♀️)
Toss in the whole pack (not wrapping) of Gorgonzola and stir till creamy *warning, you will be tempted to taste....go for it!
Pour everything into a casserole dish & bake @350/176℃ for 35 minutes.
Ready to eat & can be heated up in the micro or oven on the day you're serving...even better the next day!! Let me know if you try it!

Also, for you really radical folks, you can add some slivers of sun dried tomato to the bacon mix..if you're the dangerous & saucy!!

First of all, Columbus Day makes no sense. The man never set foot on the continental US. You have a national holiday celebrating the man who "discovered America" and he did no such thing. I get that the Italians want more than proshoot and John Gotti but Columbus Day ain't right from the premise.

When using Microsoft Word or Google Docs, don't just make text bigger and bolder to make it a heading. That will work for sighted users, but screen reader users will miss that and just hear it as normal paragraph text. Use actual heading styles, like level 1 through 6.

Poor little Olive is deaf. And either from playing too hard with Curlee or from natural causes, her hips bother her. She gets up slowly and no longer plays like the puppy she is. So I give her little treats. More than I give Curlee and Peanut. Because I know what it's like to not be able to hear.

From 2022: Still not sure what it was. Might be Saluyot (jute mallow). As I recall, it didn't have a lot of flavor. At a Filipino restaurant. "I've had a lot of exotic food in the last 20 years but this is my first bowl of Frog Snot Soup."
