4/ I’m especially interested in candidates with strong analytical and coding skills and experience with EEG, MEG or simultaneous EEG–fMRI. Experience with physiological recordings, multimodal integration, psychophysics, arousal or interoception would be particularly valuable.

3/ Potential projects will combine EGG with EEG, fMRI and peripheral physiology to investigate gastric–brain coupling and fluctuations in arousal. The postdoc will have scope to shape the precise questions and develop an independent line within the programme.

2/Our research asks how signals from the gut influence brain activity, cognition and affect. We study the stomach’s intrinsic electrical rhythm and metabolic signals, and how they interact with brain systems supporting arousal, attention, motivation and emotion.

Over a slower timescale of minutes to hours, metabolic and gut hormones such as ghrelin, GLP-1, insulin, and leptin , signal energy availability. We propose these act as an energy gauge, tuning motivation, reward sensitivity, and affect.

Over seconds, the stomach contracts to pace digestion but also synchronize large scale brain activity. We argue that this is a mechanism the brain has to regulate arousal. Like a dial increasing brain-stomach coupling reduces arousal and vice-versa, reducing coupling increases arousal

Why does your mind feel sharp in the morning, foggy after lunch, and tired by evening? With lead author Nikolina Birimac, we propose that two timescales of gut activity, fast motility and slower hormones could help answer this question

Is there a single "interoceptive sense"? Our new study in @commspsychol.nature.com says: probably not. In 241 participants, cardiac and respiratory interoception were completely uncorrelated — only subjective confidence was shared across domains. www.nature.com/articles/s44... #psychscisky 🧪
Graphical abstract showing three panels. Left panel, "Multiorgan Interoception Measures," depicts a translucent human body
silhouette with anatomically rendered heart (red) and lungs (blue), accompanied by schematic icons for three
psychophysical tasks: the Respiratory Resistance Sensitivity Task (RRST), Heart Rate Discrimination Task (HRDT), and an
auditory control condition. N = 241 participants. Center panel, "Psychophysical Modelling and Individual Differences,"
shows a fan of overlapping sigmoid psychometric curves in blue-to-red gradient representing individual variation in
perceptual threshold (α) and precision (β), a hierarchical Bayesian model diagram, and icons for metacognitive bias and
M-Ratio efficiency. Right panel, "Key Finding: No Cross-Modal Relationship," displays a scatterplot of cardiac versus
respiratory sensitivity with a flat regression line (r ≈ 0, BF₀₁ > 6), a compact Bayes Factor heatmap with mostly blue
null-supporting cells and one orange cell indicating that subjective confidence is shared across modalities (r = 0.51***).
   Takeaway: interoceptive ability is modality-specific.

Are you curious about electrogastrography, but keep getting chicken-related results when googling "EGG"? We have the preprint for you! In this tutorial, we describe how to acquire and analyse gastric data from human participants. Plus FREE software! Read it here: arxiv.org/abs/2509.17260
Image illustrating sensor placement. The reference sensor is placed on the xiphoid process (just under the sternum), the ground is placed on the left costal margin (just under the bottom rib), and sensors one through four are place over where the stomach would be. Sensor 3 is midway through the umbilicus (navel) and the reference sensor. Sensor 4 is roughly three centimetres from sensor 3 to participant-right. Sensors 2 is also roughly three centimetres away from sensor 3, but along a 45 degree angle upwards and to participant-left. Sensor 1 lies 3 centimetres further from sensor 2, along the same 45 degree line.Two-panel image showing a processed electrogastrogram. The left panel shows five minutes of raw data from four different leads (measured from the four sensors in the previous image and their common reference). The right panel shows the same signal in frequency space, illustrating the typical normogastric peak at 3 cycles per minute.
