If you're unsure about modern medicine and whether to vaccinate your kids, I recommend visiting a local church's old graveyard. Look at the ages of the deceased. It's utterly devastating just how many children are buried there. We don't have to repeat this.
Grave/memorial stone for three children from one family, who died aged 6, 7, and 1.

Serious science question from one kid: "What happens to time in a black hole?" My highly inexpert answer was followed by the other kid: "What about if I threw a poo at a black hole?" Very relieved to know I only have to save up for one round of university tuition.

In this time of redundancies all across UK higher education, it feels a bit worrying when administrators take an interest in your work...
Variation on the classic meme of Ralph Wiggum sitting in a bus, chuckling, and then saying "I'm in danger!" Wiggum is wearing a mortar board. Next to him we can see a LinkedIn screenshot that says "Education Administrator at University of Bristol viewed your profile."

Average editor: Tick suggested names, send automated review requests. Good editor: Find relevant reviewers, send personalised messages. IEEE Systems Journal: Keep spamming the same potential reviewers even after they reject multiple times. One hundred “no” and one “yes” means “yes”, baby!

Big "for me, it was Tuesday" energy. Also, not all of us are like this! Some of us have a pathological need to be liked and will randomly wake up, drenched in sweat, stressing about that one slightly negative comment on an evaluation from 2021. Students can (and should) abuse these character flaws.

Finally had enough of my smart watch. Constant notifications, patronising reminders, and low sleep scores for waking to attend children. I used to sell expensive watches. Disliked over-affluent customers, but loved the mechanisms. This one isn't particularly high-end, but so much less disruptive!

The one thing I really appreciate about modern academic publishers is how much value they add. Their copy-editing is of such a high standard that they wouldn’t, for example, publisher a paper with two errors in the title.
Screenshot of a paper in The Journal of Educational Research, published by Taylor & Francis, with the title “Dose local students’ presence affects remote students’ performance in blended synchronous learning?”

“Dose” should have been “Does”; “affects” should have been “affect”.
