It sometimes feels like we're living in a ridiculously exaggerated folk tale with wildly implausible villains. For example, as the president takes billions for himself and his family and *coats his things in gold,* the soldiers fighting his war can't get toothpaste, hot water, or a clean toilet.

Good essay but the instinct to blame capitalism alone is strange given the disastrous communist famines of the Holodomor and Great Leap Forward. The problem is more general than capitalism. In any case, food inflation is bad but famine is less likely today than 50 or 100 years ago.

Walden's books is 90% or more images and dialog that are simply not in Cleves' book. It's not plagiarism, it's not a "rip off." Walden credits Cleves' work in an afterward. Cleves is cited 50+ times in the companion website, which calls her "our Holy Mother of knowledge." www.charityandsylvia.com
I was able to weave these short remembrances together into a story with the added context of over 900 letters (nearly all sent to them) and the formidable, endlessly informative history on their lives written by Rachel Hope Cleves titled Charity and Sylvia and published in 2014. Without these different angles from which to see them, my job would have been much harder. Their own papers rarely mentioned their childhoods, but because of the work of historian Hope Cleves and her research into that, I was able to describe their youth with a satisfying amount of detail.

An "economist" so dumb I had to explain to him how the import price index works last month will now lead the BLS, kill me
a tweet from EJ Antoni that reads "Import prices just came in WAAAY below expectations: June was up just 0.1% M/M, -0.2% Y/Y, while May saw a huge downward revision from flat to -0.4% M/M; still waiting for tariffs to be passed on by foreign producers..."

I replied "The import price index measure pre-tariff prices, the fact that pre-tariff prices are basically flat means Americans are paying the tariffs. Though I wouldn’t expect a Heritage foundation guy like yourself to be smart enough to understand basic stuff like that."

This is so important. The focus on job numbers ignores the fact that the BLS computes inflation (the CPI) which is directly linked to many government and non-government benefits. Any attempt at politicizing inflation numbers is very, very, very bad…
