I don't suppose anyone asked him why he doesn't make it happen. He'd be on firmer legal ground with embargos. To be clear, not saying he should. Just wondering why he doesn't

He came and presented a paper when I was a graduate student at Wash U. I don't remember what he presented. I do remember that he tried to talk to every student doing history about their research.

What he actually won was $997m. He could have instead taken 30 annual payments that added up to $2.04b. Don't disagree with the point about taxing billionaires, just pointing out that they always lie about how much people win in lotteries.

It sometimes feels like we're living in a ridiculously exaggerated folk tale with wildly implausible villains. For example, as the president takes billions for himself and his family and *coats his things in gold,* the soldiers fighting his war can't get toothpaste, hot water, or a clean toilet.

Thanks. The conference was everything I like about business history: enthusiastic audiences interested in a wide variety of topics, disciplines, and methods. And the organizer did an incredible job.

I thought Becker believed that the subject was "the allocation of scarce means to satisfy competing ends," that this covered every type of human choice, and that the tools that economists had developed to study markets could be usefully employed in non-market settings

Good essay but the instinct to blame capitalism alone is strange given the disastrous communist famines of the Holodomor and Great Leap Forward. The problem is more general than capitalism. In any case, food inflation is bad but famine is less likely today than 50 or 100 years ago.

I really enjoyed spending the last 30 minutes figuring out that in order to submit my paper to an Elsevier journal, the MS can be pdf, but the separate title page cannot be a pdf, but must be either a Word file or sent to them by post as cuneiform tablets.

Showing copying of the form of expression seems difficult. One is an academic history. The other is a comic book, composed of drawings and dialog, which Walden had to make up. In her webpage Walden makes clear that although influenced by the sources she was not bound by them like a historian.

Brad Hansen @bradhansen.bsky.social · 03/07/2026
Absolutely, use of the title and historical facts discovered by Cleves is irrelevant since they are not covered by copyright. It has to be shown that there was substantial copying of the expression, which is covered by copyright.

Walden's books is 90% or more images and dialog that are simply not in Cleves' book. It's not plagiarism, it's not a "rip off." Walden credits Cleves' work in an afterward. Cleves is cited 50+ times in the companion website, which calls her "our Holy Mother of knowledge." www.charityandsylvia.com
I was able to weave these short remembrances together into a story with the added context of over 900 letters (nearly all sent to them) and the formidable, endlessly informative history on their lives written by Rachel Hope Cleves titled Charity and Sylvia and published in 2014. Without these different angles from which to see them, my job would have been much harder. Their own papers rarely mentioned their childhoods, but because of the work of historian Hope Cleves and her research into that, I was able to describe their youth with a satisfying amount of detail.

But he appears to see this global process beginning in Europe, which seems too undermine the claims he made about capitalism arising in many parts of the world.

I think Beckert agrees. Islands of capital are not capitalism. Since he defines capitalism as a global process structured by the state. You don't get capitalism until you have states and capitalists working together to make the process of capital accumulation global.
