Software engineering could and should be done with the same care as any other type of engineering. This is a post in honor of Margaret Hamilton (and also a subtweet of all vibe-coders everywhere).
Screencap

"“I fought to bring the software legitimacy so that it — and those building it — would be given its due respect, and thus I began to use the term ‘software engineering’ to distinguish it from hardware and other kinds of engineering, yet treat each type of engineering as part of the overall systems engineering process,” Hamilton told El Pais in 2018. “When I first started using this phrase, it was considered to be quite amusing. It was an ongoing joke for a long time. They liked to kid me about my radical ideas. Software eventually and necessarily gained the same respect as any other discipline.”"

NEW: Amazon will refund thousands of Prime members in Wards 7 and 8 for secretly excluding them from full delivery services. The exclusions have now been lifted, and Amazon will also be required to change its practices. No corporation is too big to be held accountable for deceiving DC residents.

Strongly agree. LLM AIs are dangerous products. Meanwhile the amount of debt being issues to build AI systems is pushing us towards a financial crisis worse than 2008 and another Great Depression.

I see a financial crisis worse than 2008 happening if AI companies continue their excessive borrowing. Companies need to be stopped from borrowing billions of dollars for AI products with questionable value. They are driving borrowing costs to unsustainable levels.

DoorDash has ripped off more than 260,000 NYC delivery workers. We’re making them pay $131.5 million — the largest worker settlement in City history. This is New York, where hard work pays and greed will cost you.
DoorDash messed up.
They repeatedly left more than 260,000 NYC delivery workers underpaid or paid late, causing them immense stress and financial difficulty.
That's unacceptable.
We've secured a $131.5M settlement from
DoorDash - the largest worker settlement in NYC history and largest delivery worker settlement in
American municipal history.
Every worker will be paid what they are owed, and every company will be forced to abide by the laws of this city.

More evidence allowing the AI bubble to continue is a major financial risk. AI bubble debt is approaching $2 trillion. They will consume more liquidity and drive up interest rates. Meanwhile, the bubble will cause reduced investment in of the economy that produce sustainable tax revenue.

Although I don’t moderate this section of the forum, here’s a friendly reminder from last time the US government instigated a frivolous naming dispute over an international body of water:

These are the guidelines we use to determine what should be considered the name of a feature:

Names
Multilingual names
Disputes
Currently, the Gulf is tagged with name=Golfo de México, name:en=Gulf of Mexico, and official_name:en-US=Gulf of America. This is unlikely to change, unless the US government reverses its position, or (less likely) English speakers across the world all agree to start using the US government name. That last tag, official_name:en-US=*, is quite obscure and doesn’t show up on any map renderers that I’m aware of. But its inclusion allows people to, for example, search for “Gulf of America” and be redirected to the Gulf of Mexico.

Please keep comments on-topic and substantial. We all have opinions, and it’s easy to drop your two cents in an online forum. However, a discussion about OSM naming guidelines or real-world name usage statistics might be worth at least a few dollars here.

In this case, the lake is tagged with name=Lake Ontario, official_name:en-US=Lake America. For this situation to change, the government would need to reverse its position.

The guidelines on naming disputes apply to every country equally. This is far from the only naming dispute around the world. Let’s not get bogged down in American exceptionalism when we consider how the tagging guidelines should or shouldn’t change.

I think rising debt levels are a national emergency that may cause a financial crisis. AI borrowing should be stopped before it wastes more liquidity. Rising borrowing costs will make it far more challenging for consumers and the US government to pay off debt. www.investors.com/news/us-debt...

I made another unhoused friend today. Jon is a tattoo artist who suffered a chronic injury his thumb a year ago and can’t do his work anymore as a result. He only recently became homeless. He told me the same thing I’ve heard from so many unhoused folks I’ve talked to over the last year. It’s embarrassing. And I always tell them some version of the same thing.

Make Care Visible
There’s a rather popular flavor of social media content focused on helping unhoused people. The creator will give out sleeping bags, socks, and care kits; sit down and have a meal; or take the unhoused person shopping. Sometimes they help them find work or start a GoFundMe to get them off the streets. It does a lot of good. But it’s also gross AF! Imagine you’re cold, hungry, and desperate, and someone offers to get you all the things you need… if you consent to having a camera shoved in your face and the footage of you at your lowest blasted on the internet.
