A morning jaunt to a local nature reserve in Plymouth unveiled a gorgeous colony of Autumn Ladies Tresses (Spiranthes spiralis). A herald of autumn, this gorgeous species is largely restricted to south Britain often found growing on dry calcareous soils. A beautiful species and one of my favourites!

Having a fantastic time at the Botanical University Challenge Student Botanty Festival! Really fascinating panel talk at the moment talking about the crucial questions in botany and ecology! Lovely to see the BSBI Countries Manager James Harding-Morris on stage too!

After a bit of a hiatus in social media I will hopefully be getting back to posting a little more regularly! A pretty major life update is that I will be moving to London at the end of August to begin my internship at RBG Kew! I am dead excited to start, but definitely feeling a bit nervous!

Some of the fungi and oomycetes that infect Devil's Bit Scabious - keep a look out next year! #FungiFriends #PlantPathogens
An illustration titled "Pathogens of Succisa pratensis Moench". It shows a plant of Succisa with a brown leaf spot labelled Septoria succisicola, yellow pustules labelled Synchytrium succisae, a brown flower smut Microbotrum flosculorum, a white flower smut Microbotryum succisae, a white mildew on the stem Erysiphe knautiae, and a downy mildew Peronospora violacea on the flowers which causes them to be larger, redder, and without anthers. A close-up is shown of the conidiophores of Peronospora violacea which look like small trees with spores on them.

OVER THE MOON! 😍 Golden bog-moss (Sphagnum pulchrum), a nationally v rare beastie, was presumed extinct on Britain’s 3rd largest raised bog… That is, until today, where I stumbled upon this teeny area where it’s clinging on for dear life! Isn’t it a beaut? 😍🌱

Here are two of my favourite Waxcap species seen this year- the dainty Goblet Waxcap (Hygrocybe lepida), and Slimy Waxcap (Gliophorus irrigatus). Both of these beautiful species were seen in species rich, coastal grassland in Cornwall.

Aside from seeing so many beautiful Waxcap species this year, I have spent so much time in the field learning from talented ecologists, mycologists, and hyper-focused amateurs. I cherish the moments spent sharing the joy of finding a Parrot Waxcap, or the exhilaration in fleeing over-friendly sheep!

When hunting for Waxcaps around Plymouth University campus, I chanced upon a tiny mushroom fruiting in abundance. After a bit of searching it turned out to be a species of Fanvault (Hodophilus sp., fantastic common name). Microscopy was needed to reveal the species- H. variabilipes, a rare find!

More pictures from a brilliant 2024 Waxcap season, all from the species rich grasslands of Mt Edgecumbe Estate, Cornwall. First is Yellow-foot Waxcap (Cuphophyllus flavipes, so named because of the yellowish base), Blushing Waxcap (Neohygrocybe ovina), and Citrine Waxcap (Hygrocybe citrinovirens).

The cold snap last week has brought the Waxcap season to an end in Cornwall- here are a few of my favourite pictures from this season! First we have a gorgeous Parrot Waxcap (Gliophorus psittacinus), a delicate Scarlet Waxcap (Hygrocybe coccinea), and a robust Crimson Waxcap (Hygrocybe punicea)!

In celebration of being added to the Botany starter pack, here's a picture of Henbane, Hyoscyamus niger, on our allotment in early September. I collected seed from plants on the outskirts of Norwich 12 years ago and have kept the plants going ever since. Ours are annuals. #Plants #Flowers

Been a while since my last post here so I thought I'd give a little update as to what I've been doing! In June, I started an ARIES research placement with the University of Plymouth. Over the last few months I have been busy learning all about dendrochronlogy and its practical applications.

Ferns for my first proper post! Since moving to Plymouth, I've come to appreciate how much I miss living in a rural town for the ease of access to brilliantly diverse wildlife sites. Some Asplenium from my wanders- A. ruta-muraria, A. adiantum-nigrum, A. marinum, and A. trichomanes.

Great to have been invited here! We're a group of conservation volunteers who care about this rare habitat in the middle of Headington in Oxford. Expect photos of #fungi, all kinds of #inverts, some #birds, lots of scarce and rare #plants and #flowers, and of course our conservation volunteers.
A view down a valley. There is a boardwalk starting in the foreground which meanders into the distance. The sun is setting, and the photo includes "lens flare" where there seem to be rays of sunshine visible. The very blue sky is filled with altocumulus clouds. There are leafless tress on either side of the valley, and the low sun is reflecting the seed heads of reed to the left.

A few weeks ago I was fortunate enough to meet two (of the three) species of British Hericiums in the same day. Extraordinarily, they were growing about 10ft apart! 🦁 🍄📷 Hericium erinaceus (Bearded Tooth) and H. cirrhatum (Tiered Tooth). Just need to find H. coralloides (Coral Tooth) now… 🪸
Hericium erinaceus, Bearded Tooth. Close up of spines.
Because of its rarity this beautiful being is one of the most highly protected fungi in the UK. It’s also very prized for its edibility and medicinal powers. But if you do fancy eating it or using it medically just buy it from a grower, hey. Or grow it yourself.Hericium cirrhatum, Tiered Tooth. View of large white mushroom inside a log pile.

Not quite as rare, but just as impressive in its own way is Tiered Tooth. This extraordinary specimen was growing in a beech log pile.

My official first post: Tunbridge Filmy Fern (of the filmy ferns in the UK I was especially pleased to find this, the rarer of the two last week having previously encountered neither) - growing below the overhang of a rock face about 10m vertically from the footpath (this being the most accessible!)
