First tasting of new 2026 De Ranke Père Noël. Pleased to report it's up to its usual standard, i.e. absolutely magnificent. Cheers! 🍻 🇧🇪

Today's sunrise wasn't till 7.44am, so the sun was still low in the sky when I took this at 8.33am, out in the Koolkerke farmlands about 6km outside Brugge towards the coast.
The sun hasn't long risen and is still shrouded in some light mist and cloud. There are trees in the middle of the photo and some cows in the field in the foreground.

Finally got round to getting my tick in Den Heirweg, Zedelgem. Took scenic route, 20km via woods/countryside, all v.peaceful, to what is officially a wielercafe (cycling pub), complete with its own cycle club. St Bernardus Tripel = a great start; freebie = Tongerlo Blond. Happy weekend all! 🍻 🇧🇪

After 5 hours at Dok I visited ChopinChopin for 1st time. Between Gruut & Trollekelder, this bar has c.25 beers mostly from smaller, lesser seen breweries & is therefore very appealing. Really enjoyed Contreras 1818 saison. Hope to return to this one soon.

The verdict: they're definitely different beers but also VERY close relatives. Firstly, per bottles, Petrus = 8% while Forbel = 8.4%. Second, Forbel is ever so slightly sweeter. But differences are minimal & one could be excused for thinking they're one & the same. They're not, but it's very close!

Time for some vital research: the inevitable side by side - new Lidl Forbel Tripel vs Petrus Tripel. Are they actually the same beer? Results to follow...
Two glasses and two bottles of tripel. Some folk have suggested they're actually the same beer, but this side by side tasting hopes to confirm either way.

Cycled the 6 miles to Oostkerke & FINALLY found tickbook pub De Knotwilg open. Nice enough place, atmosphere ruined by exceptionally loud group who reckoned they owned the place. Oh well. Anyway, tickbook freebie = beer of similar value to your 1st. Orval purchased; Rochefort 8 = free. Result!

In his speech yesterday, Canada PM Mark Carney seemed to try to explain to the President what a “trade deficit” is. You’re not just giving another country 100s of millions of dollars… You’re buying things from them! That you want!
Another prominent justification for U.S. tariffs has been their claim that, since the United States runs a trade deficit with Canada, we were "ripping them off"
But the United States' narrow merchandise trade deficit only exists because the U.S. buys so much of its energy from us.
Canada fuels American growth: supplying 99% of their natural gas imports, 85% of electricity imports, and 60% of crude oil imports. I don't think they want us to stop sending it.
And the comprehensive U.S.-Canada trade balance, which includes the many services - from finance to entertainment - that we buy from the U.S. shows a persistent American trade surplus.
Most fundamentally, trade is about building mutual strength - creating a relationship that benefits both countries.
For example, Canada is the largest customer for U.S. cars - in fact, we buy more American-built cars than the United Kingdom, Japan, and China combined.
