#OTD 23 September 1846, Neptune was observed by German astronomer Johann G. Galle, confirming French mathematician Urbain Le Verrier's prediction of the planet's existence. Neptune had been observed many times in the past but not recognised. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discove... @science.esa.int

#NASARoman activated the Wide Field Instrument—a 300-megapixel infrared camera that will allow it to explore wide swaths of the cosmos quickly. This test image captures the very first photons of starlight to reach the instrument—taken as an initial performance assessment: go.nasa.gov/4rg4qEc

In April 1946, Albert Einstein visited Lincoln University, a historically Black university, received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree and spoke against racial segregation in the United States. A refugee from Nazi Germany, he supported civil rights causes and corresponded with W.E.B. Du Bois.

Prisoner’s dilemma in action: In 1988 Dolly Parton pulled every 7th and 8th grader in Sevier County into a room and told them to pick a buddy. She made them sign a contract.. if BOTH graduate, she hands you both $500. One fails, nobody gets paid. The county dropout rate went from 35% to 6%.

I started my PhD program with an eight week old at home, sole income being my doctoral stipend, in a history program, in Knoxville, TN. And every month we got a new book to read to my son, free, mailed to us, so my kid, my kids, grew up in rooms full of books even when I had no money. That's Dolly.

Along with his wife Carolyn Shoemaker he discovered a total of 32 comets. Of particular interest was the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, because it was calculated to collide with Jupiter in July 1994, allowing astronomers to study what happens during an impact.

The National Archives has the handwritten & signed copy of the Declaration. The Library has two of the older, typeset copies made at a Philadelphia print shop on July 4th & 5th, 1776. Just 26 of ~200 copies made in this first printing are known to still exist. www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtIv...
