For National Poetry Day, Frank O'Hara
Poem [“Lana Turner has collapsed!”]

By Frank O’Hara
Lana Turner has collapsed!
I was trotting along and suddenly
it started raining and snowing
and you said it was hailing
but hailing hits you on the head
hard so it was really snowing and
raining and I was in such a hurry
to meet you but the traffic
was acting exactly like the sky
and suddenly I see a headline
lana turner has collapsed!
there is no snow in Hollywood
there is no rain in California
I have been to lots of parties
and acted perfectly disgraceful
but I never actually collapsed
oh Lana Turner we love you get up

Again and again the leaves / enact their beauty Marianne Boruch
Over the Twilight Street

Fall. And the boys are cold, without jackets the football their milkweed pod
bursting over the twilight street. They jump and release themselves, crying
like birds. Hours from the morning fog
the air is chilled good water
taken from a stream
with a cupped hand. They can barely keep themselves inside their bodies, vivid as light
through leaves, though now the leaves
have their own lifetime to consider
pressing back
into trance: a red brilliance
which listens for no one, an iridescence too complete to translate. I bike by them the football spinning above me,
a blurred planet. Boys who will be men, boys who will be taken by surprise by failure. Again and again the leaves enact their beauty.

AI is the Gyges' ring of student work: it offers perfect concealment of wrongdoing. If Glaucon is right, then everyone will use it to do injustice (cheat), & will be wise to do so. If Socrates/Plato is right, then doing so also harms the wrong-doer, whose soul will be malformed into misery by it.

Sheena Blackhall

Yestreen I heard a birdie sing
Inbye a bonnie beech tree hedge
As if it didnae ken nor care
Autumn wis hidin in the sedge

The daith o leaves is roon the neuk
It peints them yalla, reid an broon
An doon they’ll drap like faain rain
In waesome Autumn’s dowie croon

Sic cheenges cam tae great an sma
First ae grey hair, a nippin knee
The stert o auld age: clawin cleuks
That herald yer mortality

Autumn draws near, like cat wi moose
It winna stop, nor else devaul
A jeelin in a body’s banes
A cheenge, the turn frae warm tae caul

Noo blawin in the win, dry leaves
Like Simmer’s ghaists, ethereal
This is the Sizzen o the scythe
The nichts draw in, a mournin pall

A Poem from my 2016 collection Not Even Laughter featuring Leonard Cohen, who was born on this day in 1934.
Music for Airports

Up late drinking Polish lager, pulling records
out of Mylar sleeves, stoned on medical sativa,
cuing tracks by Johnny Cash, The Fall, and Nico

on your second-hand Technics. While the D3s kicked
out Jackson, Pay your Rates, The End, and English
Scheme, you chain-smoked Dunhills -- browsed.

the plywood shelves for doubles, poked through
Sealtest crates. One Sunday two years later,
searching listlessly for Astral Weeks, I find the pile

of ring worn albums that you gave to me to keep--
Hot Buttered Soul, a James Last import, Space Age
percussion suites for hi-fis, Brian Eno's landmark

foray into soundscapes, its water-damaged cover
stained and wrinkled -- the disc inside like Leonard
Cohen's shy one -- unplayed and still pristine.

We went a journey far away John Clare, from Northborough MS B9
We went a journey far away The path was often ill to find
The cows from strangers turned away & turned a carless look behind
We passed the stupid staring horse
The farmer eyed us with dislike & where we found no brig to cross We pulled each other oer the dyke
The men where burning shoaf around & thick the ashes seemed to fall The smoke went over half the ground & rolled along & hid us all
We found the columbine so black & dug & took a bundle back

I’ve reached the point - well actually, I reached it a while ago - where I’m militantly anti-AI. Fine - use it in bioscience labs and radiology where it might help analyse data more effectively. Use it sparingly for systems engineering. Everywhere else, it can fuck off.

For my birthday today I want everyone to listen to Ys by Joanna Newsom in its entirety and read along to the lyrics. Thank you
Rowing along, among the reeds, among the rushes,
I heard your song, before my heart had time to hush it!
Smell of a stonefruit being cut and being opened.
Smell of a low and of a lazy cinder smoking

And when the fire moves away,
fire moves away, son.
Why would you say
I was the last one?

Scrape your knee: it is only skin.
Makes the sound of violins.

And when I cut your hair, and leave the birds all of the trimmings,
I am the happiest woman among all women.

And the shallow water stretches as far as I can see.
Knee deep, trudging along -
the seagull weeps 'so long' -
humming a threshing song -

Until the night is over, hold on, hold on;
hold your horses back from the fickle dawn.Last week, our picture window
produced a half-word,
heavy and hollow,
hit by a brown bird.

We stood and watched her gape like a rattlesnake
and pant and labor over every intake.

I said a sort of prayer for some rare grace,
then thought I ought to take her to a higher place.
Said, "dog nor vulture nor cat shall toy with you,
and though you die, bird, you will have a fine view."

Then in my hot hand, she slumped her sick weight.
We tramped through the poison oak, heartbroke and inchoate.
The dogs were snapping, and you cuffed their collars
while I climbed the tree-house. Then how I hollered!

Well she'd lain, as still as a stone, in my palm, for a lifetime or two;
then saw the treetops, cocked her head, and up and flew.
(While back in the world that moves, often, according to the hoarding of these clues,
dogs still run roughly around
little tufts of finch-down.)
