Data Centre + Battery ≠ "renewable energy" Airtrunk is causing a massive impact on the grid. They wanted 400 megawatts, but got 300 and the remaining 100 has to be "flexible" So this is just the bare minimum, yet they frame it as climate altruism and "clean tech" www.afr.com/chanticleer/...

Data centre giant makes power move
BEN WILMOT
Data centre giant AirTrunk has struck deals with two energy infra-structure partners to develop a large scale Battery Energy Stor-age System next to its planned SYD3 data centre campus in west-ern Sydney.
The multi-billion dollar data centre being developed by the Robin Khuda-led company will be the largest independent hyper-scale data centre in the Asia-Pa-cific and Japan when it is completed in 2027.
The western Sydney data cen-tre will come online as the Al boom takes off and has a capacity of more than 320MW of comput-
ing power. The battery system known as BESS is a grid scale rechargeable battery that stores electricity in periods of surplus supply and releases it when de mand peaks.
Putting the storage system in place will help stabilise the grid as both AirTrunk's massive facility and its nearby rivals scoop up en-ergy to power their centres.
The agreements allow Air-Trunk to kick off detailed works on the best way to deliver the sys-tem, with final partnerships to be confirmed once planning assess ments are completed.
Big data centres in the US, Ire land and parts of Asia are required to use large batteries and the switch is seen as inevitable in Aus-
tralia, so companies can be re-sponsible energy users.
AirTrunk wants to be a leader in the field and get ahead of the ex-pected shift in Australia to give authorities early confidence in its solutions ranging from BESS, renewable deals, more efficient cooling, water management and dealing with utilities.
It is already talking with com-panies to roll out BESS technology in its planned Melbourne centres.
The Sydney tie-up is the first time a data centre operator has partnered directly with energy infrastructure providers on a shared connection BESS.
It is aimed at addressing rising concerns about the heavy drain of data cen…But according to sources with knowledge of the talks who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the negotiations are confidential, AirTrunk got only a firm commitment for 300 MW of power, with the remaining 100 MW granted as “flexible” power.

Freshwater flooding has caused over half of all direct hurricane deaths since 2013. The threat will increase as climate change makes hurricanes wetter and potentially slower-moving.

The last coal mine in Norway (in Svalbard) just closed. Pretty ironic choice of words here: "the atmosphere is fine" (they mean the mood among people) en.highnorthnews.com/business/end...
A dignified conclusion
The official event took place at 2 pm today, when the mine officially closed and was followed by speeches and musical performances.

"It will be a simple symbolic act. Not a celebration, but a dignified ending," Løvli emphasises.

How is the atmosphere like today?

"The atmosphere is fine. This is something people have been prepared for for a long time. But of course, now it is over. I don't think we will fully process this until tomorrow."
