Virginia's state policymakers boosted funding for free clinics some, but the state needs to do a lot more to protect us from the Trump admin's attacks on healthcare access

Very helpful explainer thread on the revised public charge rules that are intended to scare immigrant families away from accessing help during tough times. Yes, it will face legal challenge and, yes, even if those challenges are successful it will do harm to our communities.

Oh look, I have a pic from 2 years ago when I was trying to use that Walgreens bc Rite Aid transferred my prescriptions there.
Photo with a sign in the foreground saying "Welcome Rite Aid Pharmacy #3706 customers! Walgreens." In the background is an orange bike locked to a stop sign pole with a helmet dangling from the handlebars and a yellow saddlebag. The streetscape behind has sidewalks but otherwise looks car-centric.

AFAIK the Walgreens across the street has no dedicated bike parking. I usually lock to the stop sign at the parking lot exit to Westover Hills Blvd. I miss the Rite Aid at Hull & Cowardin, to which I could walk (and really need to try McGuire Park pharmacy).

Anyway, I'm just really sad about losing them. I met Beth soon after I started visiting Richmond and I've always admired her activism, her kindness, and her ability to connect with people. I didn't know Judd or Bill as well, but each was kind whenever we crossed paths & they did such important work

I think all three were clear that we don't make history in the conditions of our own choosing, and that structures matter deeply, but all three seemed to choose optimism and to see how people, historically and today, are trying their best to create a better tomorrow & have a little joy along the way

RVA lost two LGBT public historians in the last few days (Beth Marshak and Judd Proctor), on top of losing Bill Martin in December. All three were so genuinely kind and interested in people. It seemed to me that they loved history because they loved people, in our our uniqueness and possibility.

Donald Trump and Republicans enacted the largest cuts in history to Medicaid and SNAP because the nation simply “couldn’t afford” them. Now, the Trump Administration is seeking $200 billion to pursue their illegal, poorly planned war of choice against Iran. Absolutely not.

I've been at Hickory Hill twice in the last 2 weeks for things and both times there were a number of people showing up to try to vote and being turned away (with info that they can come back Apr 6 or go to Laburnum). I think the info sharing on this has been confusing to people.

The House just defeated the Iran War Powers Resolution. A tragic mistake, but it is not a war authorization. Under the Constitution, Trump's war remains illegal without authorization from Congress. Congress shouldn't vote to fund a war it has not authorized—not another penny.

There’s a lot of noise about taxes right now. The truth 👉Many proposals would lower costs for most #Virginia families and help make our tax code more fair by getting millionaires to pay their #FairShare #VaLeg
Graphic titled “The Real Story on Virginia Tax Proposals.” It lists five proposed tax changes:
1. Cut middle-class income taxes by increasing the standard deduction (HB979 & HB1074).
2. Make taxes fairer by creating a new top bracket for income over $1 million so teachers and firefighters don’t pay the same top rate as millionaires (HB188, HB979 & HB1074).
3. End the grocery tax (HB978 & HB979).
4. Reform the sales tax so digital goods and services are treated the same as physical purchases (HB900 & HB978).
5. Limit a special tax break currently going to data centers (HB961).

Some advice from someone who grew up in Baltimore where this happens more: If this pans out as a snow-then-sleet/ice storm, I suggest not shoveling until after the sleet/ice is finished. A layer of snow under the ice makes ice removal easier. And, yes, prepare for an extended power outage.

On the Capitol lawn in Richmond VA today.
The image shows a large government building with classical architectural features, including tall white columns and a triangular pediment. In front of the building, on a green grassy area, are large, free-standing letters that spell out "TAX THE RICH." Several people are gathered on the grass and around the letters, some appear to be holding signs, with the clear blue sky above them. The building has an American flag flying at the top of the pediment.
