It was a honour to help Brian & Wendy Froud (artists, folklorists, and the puppet film designers behind The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth) to turn their vision for this book into reality. Happy Book Publication Day to both of them, and to all the brilliant women writers who contributed to the volume.

The long-awaited new book—with gorgeous, all-new art—by Brian Froud, the "grandfather of faerie art"

In this compelling collection, acclaimed women writers from around the world share words and stories of fantasy and myth alongside Brian Froud's provocative portraits of more than 70 Green Women. There are a range of voices, some humorous and witty, others nurturing and maternal, others dark and threatening.

New York Times bestselling and award-winning artist Brian Froud, who brought to life Trolls and Faeries, is also beloved for his conceptual design work with Jim Henson on the classic films The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. With Green Women, his gorgeous art illuminates an entirely new universe.

Open the pages of this gorgeous gift-ready book to meet the Green Women.

"While the Green Men peer down from their church roof bosses, and through their tendrils of oak and ivy, the Green Women move among us. Brian Froud has met more than a few of them. It's their eyes—deep wells of wisdom, stories and the slow, ancient song of the forest." —Alan Lee, artist and concept designer of the film adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit

Owl of the Day: Tawny Owl 📷 Ivan Sjögren
Owl perched in tree hollow, description from ebird: ‘A medium-sized owl with deep black eyes, strictly nocturnal and infrequently seen. Gray to brown overall with a big rounded head. Found at a broad range of elevations from sea level to high mountains, in woodland, forest, parkland, rocky areas, and sometimes towns and villages. Tends to roost well hidden in foliage during the day, when may be detected by tracking down the excited sound of small birds mobbing the owl. Comes out at night to hunt in clearings and more open areas. Most often detected by its quavering hoots and "kee-wik!" shrieks, given at night. Includes Maghreb Owl, formerly considered a separate species.’

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Also, in Montreal while metro stations are slow to refit, *all* the buses really are accessible, they kneel, they have ramps, they have fold up seats to make wheelchair space. If it's not rush hour, the bus is often the best option.

Jo Walton @bluejo.eurosky.social · 03/10/2026
So Place d'Armes, the metro station by the convention centre, is fully, if weirdly, accessible. There's an elevator, there's a ramp out, you can then go into the Palais no problem. And the STM website and map are good on telling you which stations are accessible. It's way better than it was in 2009.

The absolute worst was WFC in Toronto when the podium had steps up without even a handrail, and I was sitting there thinking "That would hurt SO MUCH. I hope I haven't won." That's when I started speaking up. Also by then I was established enough that people didn't only associate me with disability.
140
Jo Walton @bluejo.eurosky.social · 03/10/2026
That was a reading. I don't even remember which con that was. When I was GoH at Wiscon the bookstore people said "Will you stand or walk about for your reading?" and I had to say "No, I need to sit." I remember another author saying "Nobody listens to you if you read sitting down." Which isn't true!
020
Jo Walton @bluejo.eurosky.social · 03/10/2026
Yeah. I'm not counting on it either. Unlike you I haven't been generally vocal and public about disability issues, largely because I am fortunate enough that when people say "Oh can't you just..." I *can*, just accepting the cost in pain, but also because I didn't want it to be what I am about.

Jo Walton @bluejo.eurosky.social · 02/10/2026
And they wanted you to be alone down there with everyone else on the stage, and I said we should all move down, and we all did. You've on the front lines of this battle for a long time, for yourself and others. Accessibility was one of the two things I asked for as GoH in Montreal. But we'll see.
