We've had moments in our current campaign where I mention Thing and the players go "Oh we know Thing", but yesterday I got to do the first consequence of letting Thing go on for too long. Nothing like watching a player put his hands in his heads and say "We should'a told someone about the alien!"

One of my favorite and most effective design patterns is "tell the player exactly what you're gonna do to them, then do it." You can be SIGNIFICANTLY meaner to the player if you simply tell them ahead of time that that's exactly what you'll be doing, and also the suspense of the warning is a delight

What you need to understand is nothing we built was “off the shelf.” Store-bought environmental assets for stop-motion features do not exist. We were given concept art and told “make it look like this.” Everything you see here, down to the dirt and moss, was meticulously designed and crafted.
