#OTDIH in 1922, #SouthTexas received its first #radio broadcasts from right here in #SanAntonio! #WOAI was founded by G.A.C. Halff and notably employed local staff, among the first in the nation to do so. By 1928, WOAI joined the world’s first broadcasting network, #NBC. Happy 104th birthday, WOAI!

I’ve long been terrified of standup comic sets, but I watched @grantsgamerecs.bsky.social tonight for my first ever comic show. He was mercifully polite when he called me out during his crowd work segment when I was the only person to guess that “Princess” was the most popular Halloween costume. 👸

#OTDIH in 1829, #Mexico abolished slavery via the #GuerreroDecree, a full 5 years before the UK and 34 years before the US. The news didn’t arrive to #Texas until October 16 which, come to think of it, should probably be our true Juneteenth day, huh? 🤔
Official portrait of Vicente Guerrero, the second president of Mexico and first Mexican president of indigenous & African descent. Who knew Mexico had a black president centuries before the United States? Vicente Guerrero is known for abolishing slavery in Mexico.

Yesterday was also the anniversary of the UT sniper shooting in Austin, Texas. I happened to be in Austin at the time, so I visited the tower to pay my respects to the deceased & their families. May they RIP. There was a lot of construction happening, so I wasn’t able to find the proper memorial.

#OTDIH in 1731, #democracy in #Texas is born—right here in #SanAntonio, in fact! Spanish settlers arrived in March 1731, forming the first municipal government. Then on Aug 1, the new city council met to elect alcaldes, effectively establishing the first system of ballot voting in the whole state. 😎

#OTDIH in 1865, the Freie Presse für #Texas, a #German -language newspaper, was founded here in #SanAntonio. The periodical was not only famous for its language but also for prominently sharing #abolitionist sentiments, leading thousands of German families in the #South to oppose the #CivilWar.
News clipping of the front page of the Freie Presse für Texas dated March 9, 1893. The Freie Presse ceased publication in 1945. Founded by August Siemering, the paper was a five-column, four-page publication that released biweekly, triweekly, & sometimes even daily issues. Siemering was eventually forced to serve the Confederate cause despite carrying staunch Unionist sentiments throughout his life. As mentioned in the original BlueSky post, many German families in the South & predominantly in Texas sympathized with the abolitionist movement, leading many of these families to be slaughtered by the Confederacy. In one remarkable story, families congregated in the Texas Hill Country near San Antonio at a place called Freethinker’s Rock to plan their escape to freedom in Mexico, perhaps along the Southern Underground Railroad. Sadly, these families were intercepted along the border before they could flee to a safer & freer life. May they RIP.

Everyone’s got an example of those lyrics they once misunderstood, right? My confession du jour: The song “Missing” by Everything But The Girl — I used to think the singer was saying, “Like a desert’s mystery” or “Like a desert’s masquerade.” Neither of which makes sense, I guess, so sue me.

#OTDIH in 1938, the historic #PecanShellersStrike took place right here in #SanAntonio. The “River Return” portal to the San Antonio Riverwalk at Concepción Park is just a half mile NE of my little, old house, and a half mile west of Mission Concepción. Some night views…
River Return is a public art installation and functional, 2-story limestone tower/plaza at Mission Concepción Park in San Antonio (600 E Theo Ave), serving as the northernmost portal to the Mission Reach. Created by artist Stacy Levy, it connects the river to the mission with walking paths, viewing decks, and designs mimicking water flow.
Key Features and Location
Purpose: The site acts as a "river connection," allowing visitors to view both the San Antonio River and the historic Mission Concepcion.
Design: It features a two-story limestone tower with a spiraling staircase, surrounded by low, curved limestone walls that simulate eddies in the water.
Artistic Details: The plaza floor includes sandblasted designs with patterns inspired by the frescos within Mission Concepción.River Return is a public art installation and functional, 2-story limestone tower/plaza at Mission Concepción Park in San Antonio (600 E Theo Ave), serving as the northernmost portal to the Mission Reach.
