#OTDIH in 1829, #Mexico abolished slavery via the #GuerreroDecree, a full 5 years before the UK and 34 years before the US. The news didn’t arrive to #Texas until October 16 which, come to think of it, should probably be our true Juneteenth day, huh? 🤔
Official portrait of Vicente Guerrero, the second president of Mexico and first Mexican president of indigenous & African descent. Who knew Mexico had a black president centuries before the United States? Vicente Guerrero is known for abolishing slavery in Mexico.

Yesterday was also the anniversary of the UT sniper shooting in Austin, Texas. I happened to be in Austin at the time, so I visited the tower to pay my respects to the deceased & their families. May they RIP. There was a lot of construction happening, so I wasn’t able to find the proper memorial.

#OTDIH in 1865, the Freie Presse für #Texas, a #German -language newspaper, was founded here in #SanAntonio. The periodical was not only famous for its language but also for prominently sharing #abolitionist sentiments, leading thousands of German families in the #South to oppose the #CivilWar.
News clipping of the front page of the Freie Presse für Texas dated March 9, 1893. The Freie Presse ceased publication in 1945. Founded by August Siemering, the paper was a five-column, four-page publication that released biweekly, triweekly, & sometimes even daily issues. Siemering was eventually forced to serve the Confederate cause despite carrying staunch Unionist sentiments throughout his life. As mentioned in the original BlueSky post, many German families in the South & predominantly in Texas sympathized with the abolitionist movement, leading many of these families to be slaughtered by the Confederacy. In one remarkable story, families congregated in the Texas Hill Country near San Antonio at a place called Freethinker’s Rock to plan their escape to freedom in Mexico, perhaps along the Southern Underground Railroad. Sadly, these families were intercepted along the border before they could flee to a safer & freer life. May they RIP.

So for my #SanAntonio peeps: A friend of mine used to attend #SAC ( #SanAntonioCollege, for the uninitiated ), and apparently they used to hand out these pencils from #PorterLoring — maybe because of SAC’s mortuary school? What on earth could this messaging possibly mean? It’s so bizarre!

#OTDIH in 1938, the historic #PecanShellersStrike took place right here in #SanAntonio. Nearly 12,000 workers (mostly #Latina, led by #EmmaTenayuca) walked off the job in protest of wage cuts to already underpaid positions in unsafe working conditions. Read more here 👉🏽 guides.loc.gov/latinx-civil...
Monochrome photo sourced from the San Antonio Light newspaper showing Latinx picketers in 1938 lining the sidewalk of a San Antonio storefront holding signs that read, “This Shop Unfair / Pecan Workers Local 172 / C.I.O.” Demonstrators dress warmly in cold weather with coats, hats, & other garb.Monochrome photo of Emma Tenayuca sourced from the Museo Del Westside website. The workers sit at a narrow table, flanked three on each side facing each other, with small burlap sacks of pecan meat and whole pecans between them on top of the table. #OTDIH 101 years ago, #Texas appointed the nation’s first all-female #SupremeCourt (pictured below). #Women didn’t even serve on juries until 1954, so this was a huge step! Shortly thereafter in February, Texas inaugurated America’s second female governor, narrowly missing the milestone by 15 days 🇺🇸

#OTDIH: #PearlHarbor happened, and the first #Black American to be honored from WWII, Doris Miller— from #Texas! —courageously left his post in the mess hall to fire artillery at the Japanese, weaponry he had never been trained to use (hint: segregation). He received the Navy Cross for his bravery.
Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, USN, Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Fleet, pins the Navy Cross on Doris "Dorie" Miller, Steward's Mate 1/c, USN, at a ceremony on board a U.S. Navy warship in Pearl Harbor, T.H., May 27, 1942. Sadly, Miller perished less than a year later when his ship was torpedoed in the Pacific Ocean during the Battle of the Gilbert Islands. The Navy posthumously honored him with a renaming of a dining hall, barracks, & even a navy destroyer escort, the USS Miller. Later in 2022, the Navy named an aircraft carrier, the USS Doris Miller, after him. TEXAS HONORS: In Waco, a YMCA branch, a park, and a cemetery bear his name; in Houston, an elementary school was named after him; in Austin, an auditorium at Huston-Tillotson College is named after him. Beyond Texas, a school was named after him in Philadelphia, a VFW chapter in Los Angeles, and a foundation for racial understanding in Chicago. Apologies for this lengthy alt text, but 300 characters are not enough to sing this man’s praises! #BlackHeroismMatters #BlackLivesMatter #BlackTexansMatter

Went to see the summer solstice performance at #SanAntonio International Airport yesterday! #URBAN-15 Group puts on the annual event, sponsored by the Department of #Arts & #Culture, and it takes place beneath a solar sculpture that aligns spectacularly with the sun. Also, happy #PrideMonth! 🌈
An image of a clearing in the four-tiered San Antonio International Airport long-term parking garage. The image is captured from the second floor. Bridges crisscross each level. All square blocks on the concrete floor are nearly aligned with the light cast from colored glass panels hanging above on a convex roof overhead. A concrete staircase with iron handrails flanks the the image on the right, while passersby observe the colored solar lighting from above. Across the clearing, other observers watch from a bridge also on the second floor as the solar colored lighting slowly aligns with the squares on the floor. Parked vehicles flank both sides of the image. An image of the solar colored panels casting blocked lighting on a concrete staircase with iron handrails. Passersby walk past the staircase toward the entrance of San Antonio International Airport. An overhead image of a performer from San Antonio’s URBAN-15 Group as she dances beneath the colored lights. Some panels are blue, some are green, and some are white. The dancer wears a tightly stretched white nylon skirt that extends from her body at the waist. The nylon skirt is embellished with light-reflective mirrors in stylized shapes such as diamonds and circles. The costume also features matching hand elements that also bear reflective mirrors in the shapes of squares and triangles. She also wears a highly stylized chapeau with fringe, mirrored patterns, and silvery ribbon. Lastly, she wears a shimmery, metallic blouse. Not featured in the image, because they are covered by the large skit, are the dancer’s loose white pants and flats. The performer is posed mid-performance with arms stretched out and head tilted.A distant image of the dancer performing atop the concrete blocks on the floor as the solar sculpture casts colored lights that align neatly with the blocks. The colors include orange, yellow, blue, green, red, purple, and white.

Photo of a mostly black-and-white print newspaper called “Occulto!” The cover page features a photo of a silhouetted paletero with glowing eyes beneath an eye-popping headline that reads, “Paletero Phantasma – Soul Sucking Ghoul Stalks Downtown San Antonio!” Behind the silhouette is a faint image of the specter of the paletero himself, possibly what he looked like when he was alive. The paletero walks through Main Plaza in downtown San Antonio before the façade of the San Fernando Cathedral. Other ledes flank the cover photo.A photo of a black-and-white print page from Occulto! magazine. This page features a story with the headline, “La Llorona Cries For Change! – San Antonians throw support behind unlikely candidate.” Beside the lede is an image of La Llorona speaking to a crowd of onlookers as she holds a sign that reads, “La Llorona VOTE.” The article is flanked by other articles of a spooky nature, include a spotlight feature on Man-Bat (an artist) and a follow-up to the Krampus Fiesta Masquerade Pachanga parade in downtown San Antonio this past holiday season.

I attended the #SanAntonio #CityCouncil #District1 Candidate Forum last night. I have a lot of thoughts on these people that can’t be captured here on #BlueSky — blasted, pesky character limits! Read my thoughts here: www.tumblr.com/houseoforang...
Facing the camera, nine political candidates sit side by side in a large fellowship hall on the second floor before large windows partially obscured by wooden Venetian blind panels. Branches & leaves of oak trees and a waxing dusk sky are beyond the windows. Before each candidate are paper name tents identifying each candidate, with the name tents sitting atop two baby blue vinyl tablecloths for two tables. The room comfortably illuminates light brown hardwood floors, and in frame of the photo at the bottom are the backs of two empty chairs, offering a clear view of the candidates. Some candidates look right to a moderator who is not shown in the photograph, while others look ahead or face down. The candidates from left to right are, First Table: Patty Gibbons, Anita Marie Kegley, Susan Strawn, Maureen Galindo (whose name tent has collapsed), Dominique “Domingo” Littwitz; Second Table: Ramiro Gonzales, Sukh Kaur, Matthew Gauna, and Julissa Medrano-Guerra. The name tents display last names of each candidate except for Matthew Gauna, whose name tent displays his full name.

#OTD in #history in 1839, the Congress of the Republic of Texas adopted the #Texas coat of arms. In 1845, officials altered the words to say "State" instead of "Republic." After a century of iterations, the government in 1992 finally simplified the coat/seal to look similar to what you see here. 🤠
