I was once extremely depressed for 10 years and didn't think I'd live too long. I made it through with the help of my cat. She's gone now, but I never forget her. Today I give to cats shelters in different parts of the US. They save us.

you dont have to love cats, but if you hate them, you can't be trusted. cats are consent creatures. they have rules about how/when they can be touched. if you dont like creatures with rules, that signals to me that you'd barrel over boundaries. i know its weird but that's how it works in my head.
