NASA picture of the day today is a real 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿beauty! This is a composite image of the ~5000yo Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis. The amazing Giuseppe Petricca has only gone and photographed the Sun at noon there, every few days, for a whole year. #Dedication 🔭🧪👌 ℹ️: science.nasa.gov/image-articl...
The imposing Callanish Stones stand talk with their shadows spanning out across the glass. It's a super clear sky, but looks cold. Above the central stone is a strange figure-of-8 shape of dots. This is the location of the Sun, at noon, on various different days across the year.

My favourite Jane Goodall quotes....so many, so to the point, so wise. How different the world would be if enough people listened to her.
"People think hope is wishful thinking, and actually hope is about action." Quote from the Wiser Than Me podcast with Julia Louis-Dreyfus."Only when our clever brain and our human heart work together in harmony can we achieve our true potential." Masks are under serious threat at being banned widely due to politicization. This would be a public health disaster. If you are only wearing a mask at protests, please consider also wearing them elsewhere. The more people mask, the more we normalize masks and protect them against bans.

Not everyone can participate in boots on the ground resistance. Protesting is a privilege. Boycotting is a privilege. Many forms of resistance are privileges that are out of reach for the most vulnerable. If you can’t be boots on the ground, here’s a community action item that needs support!

Tonight while the USA sleeps, 129 million birds will fly overhead as part of spring migration. Many will be tiny, colorful visitors arriving from South and Central America, such as warblers. Migration modeling is fascinating. Yup, that’s BIRDS on the weather radar. 🌿 🪶 Learn more: birdcast.info
A “BirdCast” map of the USA reads:

Night of April 13, 2025
129 million birds predicted
Generated 13 Apr 2025 at 06:00 UTC (13 Apr at 02:00 ET)
Bird migration forecast

The map colors show the highest intensity in the southern US, spreading northward and gradually fading in intensity in that direction. Gif of radar map. A 24-hour national mosaic animation of radar imagery featuring large numbers of birds taking flight. Circular blue and green features represent bird migration; precipitation appears as irregular bands. (Base reflectivity radar imagery from October 16th-17th, 2017, 12pm-12pm EST.)

I will never resent people for being free unless they pull up the ladder behind them or their freedom is predicated on someone else’s oppression, in which case that’s not real freedom. I will ask, as Toni Morrison encouraged us to, how they are using their freedom to free others

Many folks want to organize right now but aren’t sure how. There are many ways; that’s the hard part AND the beauty of it. This model by Leah Penniman, illustrated by Christine Tyler Hill, shows how comprehensive social change requires many strategies. We need all of us. Find your role and begin.
Four Wings Of Movement Collaboration
- Leah Penniman

A butterfly is drawn with four segments of its wings, each labeled RESIST, BUILD, REFORM, and HEAL. Within each winglet, examples are written, and they’re described in detail along the edges of the illustration.

RESISTING oppression via direct action—think Occupy, protests, boycotts, marches, treesitting, etc.

BUILDING new worlds and systems—think co-ops, community ownership models, land trusts, social networks, food hubs, organic farms, etc.

REFORMING existing systems to shift power and resources—think holding elected office, advocacy, institutional leadership, etc.

HEALING individual and collective trauma—think art and experience-making, storytelling, medicine-making, therapy, music, etc.

Cat's Eye Nebula - From Goddard Space Flight Center - flic.kr/p/7GLbNG
The Cat's Eye Nebula, one of the first planetary nebulae discovered, also has one of the most complex forms known to this kind of nebula. Eleven rings, or shells, of gas make up the Cat's Eye.

The full beauty of the Cat's Eye Nebula is revealed in this detailed view from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. The image from Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) shows a bull's eye pattern of eleven or even more concentric rings, or shells, around the Cat's Eye. Each 'ring' is actually the edge of a spherical bubble seen projected onto the sky -- that's why it appears bright along its outer edge.

Observations suggest the star ejected its mass in a series of pulses at 1,500-year intervals. These convulsions created dust shells, each of which contain as much mass as all of the planets in our solar system combined (still only one percent of the Sun's mass). These concentric shells make a layered, onion-skin structure around the dying star. The view from Hubble is like seeing an onion cut in half, where each skin layer is discernible.

The bull's-eye patterns seen around planetary nebulae come as a surprise to astronomers because they had no expectation that episodes of mass loss at the end of stellar lives would repeat every 1,500 years. Several explanations have been proposed, including cycles of magnetic activity somewhat similar to our own Sun's sunspot cycle, the action of companion stars orbiting around the dying star, and stellar pulsations. Another school of thought is t...
