The UN General Assembly resolution against torture was rejected by only three countries: the US, Israel, and Argentina, who remind the world that they oppose even the most basic principles of humanity.

A friend who teaches theology shared with me a post about CS Lewis's Mere Christianity, which discusses foundational Christian logic across denominations. It reminded me of Dale's tweet below, and I wanted to share some thoughts here regarding modesty and respectability, which are often hot topics.
Dale Partridge on Twitter writes: "Feminist media is BIG mad about me saying that women shouldn’t wear underwear (leggings and sports bras) as outerwear.

As Pearl says, “It’s amazing how hard women will fight to be naked.”

Immodest ladies, read 1 Tim. 2:9, repent, and follow Christ."

Attached are two images.

Image 1 headline: “Outraged pastor slams worker at quaint coffee shop for wearing ‘sinful’ leggings and sports bra in front of kids”

Image 2 headline: “‘Make sin shameful again’: Pastor sparks row after sports bra complaint”

Americans are holding onto devices longer than ever before, and while it may be consumer smart, it comes at a cost to work productivity and the U.S. economy.

Very few narratives piss me off as much as the whole "let's give marginalised people LLM assistants for inclusion".

Inclusion does not mean giving marginalised people shittier versions of a thing: Sure you can give kids from poorer backgrounds an LLM to "learn" but what you are saying is that poor people are not worth having trustworthy sources of information. When you say that older or lonely people can talk to chatbots to feel less alone you are saying that some people are not worth a social life.

This is a deeply inhumane perspective that goes actively against the ideas and ideals of inclusion.

I've been thinking about this for a little while now and can't quite pin down why it's making me so uncomfortable Is it the normalisation of fascism as a term or it being discarded once more as an exaggeration "we" can "all" laugh about "together"

"It's cruel to whittle this down. I'll say The Chair Company, which I love unconditionally. Haven't seen Pluribus yet but I'm excited for that. I was going to instantly answer Say Nothing but it turns out that was 2024."?
What troubles me most about Al
"I worry about weaponized misinformation eroding our already shaky consensus on what's true and what isn't. I flip-flop between that and standing in the Ed Zitron camp, waiting for the LLM bubble to pop.

It’s fun to think about the surgeon who will botch your surgery 20 years from now and what he’s doing at this moment. He just ran all his homework through ChatGPT. He just read that article about vaccines and autism at the CDC website. He just watched an Instagram video about the moon landing hoax.

Finally, I know of at least one case where the letter writer, deep into an episode of AI-induced psychosis, asked the LLM why scientists were not responding. The machine suggested that perhaps the scientists were trying to steal his discovery. This will get someone killed sooner or later.

i expect to be pilloried for this but this is at least partially a result of the type of very popular YA fixated on main characters who are special NOT bc of what they DO, but bc of their (surprise) heritage these books are usually also full of “races” with strongly stereotyped fixed traits

So jarring to witness the AI industry's daily crowing about new models and improved metrics ("SOTA benchmarks across the board!", "1M-token context window") knowing that they'll still be crap in real life settings (and that most of the metrics still trace back to eugenics).

Aside from anything else, this is bad custodianship of the neoliberal order. The right wing party is allowed to be in perpetual revolution, declaring successive Year Zeroes; the centrist one is not. It’s supposed to consolidate and lock in the gains made by the right wing party.
