I don't like that we made something that, at the very least, some people think is conscious (again, I don't), and people's first reaction to it was basically "oh, cool, ethical slavery".

The question "there are a bunch of things I could do to solve this problem, which one do I do" is kind of the entire point of the field of ethics. Even on a purely mechanistic level, I think it's probable that getting an LLM to generate more "moral" intermediate text on its way to an answer...

I don't think it's categorically wrong or psychotic to talk about an LLM's "choices" and "morality", as a metaphor/analogy. Insofar as LLMs are things that do things in the world, they're "actors". And there are things that those actors do, and things they don't do. That's a kind of choice.

And the problem of other minds is always going to be an issue. It's never going to be possible to categorically determine if an LLM's conscious, just like it is with any human that isn't you. We're not at that point, maybe we'll never be, but at some point other minds need to be taken on faith.

I don't think modern-day chatbots are conscious (humans can empathize with a paper bag with "I'm sad" written on it), but tbh, I don't think we know enough about consciousness to categorically say the architecture *can't* produce consciousness. The hard problem of consciousness is, in fact, hard.
