The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

Something to bear in mind as things get harder, from a 2009 Metafilter post from someone who lives through Sarajevo.
Metafilter post from Dee Extrovert part 1: Well, unlike the majority of you (l assume), 1 actually lived several years in a period of savagery and killing, during which nothing - food, water, electricity, phone, clothing, sense of safety, school, the ability to go out in public, etc - was available, except during totally unpredictable, brief and sporadic occasions.
Of those who couldn't leave my city, Sarajevo:
Some people (very few) were prepared for what they thought would be the "long haul" - this tended to be a couple of months. These people were widely seen as lunatics and dangerously pessimistic ones at that.
Most people were not at all prepared. This included my family. Many of those - like my family - considered the idea of "preparation" to be an affront to the decency we felt most people possessed. Were we wrong? Well, I don't know. We suffered greatly; my parents were killed. But speaking only for myself, I never felt I cheapened my soul by betting on calamity.
Today, that still feels like it's worth something.Metafilter post from Dee Extrovert part 2: But here's the main point: "Preparing" for the disaster really didn't do anyone much good. Those who
"prepared" ate a little better for a while. They stayed warmer for a few extra days. They enjoyed the radio for a while longer (via batteries.) But in the end, they ended up hungry, cold and bored too, just like the rest of us. Guns and weapons helped no one directly and were even of little to no use in the defense of Sarajevo, since they were toys compared to the shells, bombs and high-powered armaments of the attacking forces.
The worst parts of war were psychological - the fear, anxiety, boredom, loneliness, paranoia, bad dreams.
Respite from those things came with sharing food with a neighbor, finding a piece of clothing that would fit someone you knew, commiserating with others in your position, figuring out how to make make-up from brick or french fries from wheat paste and spreading this newly-acquired war knowledge around the mahala.
We knew who had extra food and supplies. For the most part, they weren't attacked or hassled or bothered. Contrary to what these survivalists say, those in dire times generally hold on to their personal sense of pride even more than they do in normal times. I'd take a bite of a friend's salad without bothering to ask in normal times. I'd never have done that in wartime, no matter how hungry I was.Metafilter post from Dee Xtrovert: Well, unlike the majority of you (l assume), 1 actually lived several years in a period of savagery and killing, during which nothing - food, water, electricity, phone, clothing, sense of safety, school, the ability to go out in public, etc - was available, except during totally unpredictable, brief and sporadic occasions.

I got the Laurelhurst Community Council's meeting minutes before they took down their website. You'll never guess what they had to say about the helicopters flying sick kids to the hospital: www.thestranger.com/news/laurelh...

Laurelhurst Community Council Isn’t Sure Helicopters Needed to Land Sick Kids at the Hospital  - The Stranger
This, the affluent North Seattle neighborhood will tell helicopters are quite the nuisance. Such a nuisance that a neighborhood group wanted to make sure the hospital wasn't landing flights on the helipad for non-emergency reasons, like a broken leg.

This succinct recap of a wild Kansas politics story has a lot to say about why the people turning up the Epstein emails were so comfortable that the veil would never be lifted. kansasreflector.com/2025/11/17/f...
Brandon Whipple considered himself a seasoned politician before running for Wichita mayor, but years of legislative wrangling didn’t prepare him for an attack so bizarre and a coverup so flawed it consumed the political career of three conspirators.

Whipple, a Democrat who served four terms in the Kansas House, was elected mayor of the state’s largest city in 2019. He prevailed despite a misinformation campaign designed to destroy Whipple’s credibility and boost the candidacy of his rival, Republican incumbent Jeff Longwell. The strategy was to weaken Whipple by posting a salacious video to social media that featured women alleging sexual harassment among state legislators. The video viewed at least 400,000 times contained the statement: “Stop Brandon Whipple.”GOP donor’s tip
For the podcast, Whipple spoke publicly for the first time about a Republican donor who tipped him off to the GOP’s covert operation. The donor confided that he’d been asked to help fund the clandestine video.

The donor’s objection wasn’t tied to general loathing of ugly personal attacks, Whipple said. Instead, he said, the donor was upset someone had the audacity to violate an unwritten code among men forbidding the sharing of knowledge about illicit liaisons.

“He basically said that he wasn’t so much concerned with any type of extramarital type activities that men do. He was concerned that some men would actually tell on other men,” Whipple said.

Whipple said a lawsuit produced texts shared among the perpetrators in which they reveled at the chance to damage Whipple’s marriage and career. Their viciousness was alarming, he said.

“They really hated me. It’s nuts,” he said. “We’re attacking people and their character and their families. We’re not just saying, ‘Well, you voted this way.’ That was really eye-opening to me.”

In 2020, Capps lost his House reelection bid. O’Donnell and Clendenin both resigned from office.

New awareness campaign
A digital poster in the style of a World War II propaganda piece. Isolaed on a yellow background, a normal, squarish, 20-something guy with glasses is sitting working on a laptop. A ghostly figure of Hitler has his arm around the guy and is grinning and shaking a fist triumphantly looking at the laptop screen. On the lid of the laptop where an apple might otherwise be is an openAI logo, bright green, and dripping green ooze down the lid. Text on the poster, in combinations of sans-serif type and brush script reads:
Using Generative AI?
You’re prompting with Hitler!
GenAI is a Fascist Project!
Try using your brain instead
Don’t surrender your creativity to the tech billionaire’s control

Sailor Neptune wandering the liminal spaces known as the pool rooms. Pictured, a long hallway extending to pitch darkness, crystal blue pool water over knee level. Neptune striding slowly, leaning toward the tile covered walls in desperation, head slumped against it and her shoulders hung in utter misery.

Arkhip Kuindzhi's paintings astound the eye. As a young man he was apprenticed to Ivan Aivazovsky, the renowned russian painter whose works have ended up in concept art and film lookbooks in recent decades. Arkhip's own are more bold and graphic than his masters, yet nonetheless magnificent.

Kurt Vonnegut’s definition of what makes something “art” is one of my favorites I’ve seen - from a letter to his brother in 1995.
People capable of loving some paintings or etchings or whatever can rarely do this without knowing something about the art-ist. Again, the situation is social rather than scientific. Any work of art is one halt of a conversation between two human beings, and it helps a lot to know who is talking at you. Does he or she have a reputation for seriousness, for sincerity? There are virtually no beloved or respected paintings made by persons of whom we know nothing. We can even surmise a lot about the lives of whoever did the paintings in the caves underneath Lascaux, France.
So I dare to suggest that no picture can attract serious attention without a human being attached to it in the viewer's mind. If you are unwilling to attach your name to your pictures, and to say why you hope others might find them rewarding to look at, there goes the ballgame right there. Pictures are famous for their human-ness and not their picture-ness.
There is also the matter of craftsmanship. Real picture lovers like to "play along," so to speak, to look closely at the surface to see how the illusion was created by nothing but an unusual human being, with hands and eyes. If you are unwilling to say how you made your pictures, there goes the ballgame a second time.
Good luck, and love as always
