Fibre optic cables now span the world under seas & over land. Before the first transatlantic FO cables were laid, communication was by copper wire cables. It transformed global comms - together with satellite technology. Without public/private partnership, that would unlikely have happened. 3/end

Here is an example of how that worked back in the day. The use of fibre optics was developed by a British company Standard Telephones and Cables (STC). They were a single client supplier to the GPO - later known as British Telecom - itself privatised in 1980s. (I know because I worked for STC). 2/

Where there is a will, there will always be a way. The rejoin terms will almost certainly be ameliorated to accommodate the UKs return. My gut feeling is that will include single currency and Schengen. The EU will know that these were real sticks that the Leavers used to further their cause.

Great idea, it's not happening is it? Even if Burnham is more amenable to PR, his parliamentary party has, through a failed belief that somehow they will replace the Tories and become the natural party of government, has always denied to seek to rectify the unfairness of FPTP. Jenkins Report etc.

Abhorrent.

Farage argued that “over three-quarters” of small-boat arrivals were “young undocumented males” from “cultures entirely different from ours” who were “unlikely to assimilate” and “pose a risk to women and girls”.

Asked about some of his language, the Downing Street spokesperson said: “We have to recognise the strength of feeling about this,” and he stressed “the serious, practical action” that the government was taking to address the issue.

It's quite extraordinary how ignorant he is. WW2 Germany - unconditionally surrendered Japan - unconditionally surrendered WWI Germany - signed an armistice deal requiring the complete demilitarization of Germany & the evacuation of territories they had seized, plus pay huge reparations.
