Dear tv and radio producers. Thankyou for the invitation. But, no, I do not want to appear on your show to defend the idea that I am English, after 50 years of living and working here, because the increasingly feral right want to turn this into a "debate" and you cannot see how you're being played

Parties prepare for byelection in Farage seat amid speculation over £5m gift inquiry
Tories said to be ready to fight in Clacton, with standards investigation rumoured to be nearing its end Nigel Farage’s rivals are gearing up for a byelection in the months ahead, amid speculation that the standards inquiry into his £5m gift is nearing a conclusion. Conservative sources said the party was ready to fight in Farage’s Clacton seat, although senior figures in the shadow cabinet are divided about whether it would be winnable, given Farage’s victory in a byelection over the summer. Global interest in the process of uniting Ireland, and are we in the post-peace process era?
Rónán Duffy on a recent Journal politics podcast 'The Candidate' made an excellent point about the response to the comments by the US President in relation to Irish unity. “Followed up on it the following day as well. But it's been interesting, kind of the reaction to it in the sense that, you know, Trump is certainly not going to move the dial on United Ireland in any way, but the level to which it made headlines in Ireland, UK and various places around the world, it kind of showed us how big any kind of unity debate and referendum is going to be.

Hiberno-English word/phrase of the day: Fla (Also: Flah) 'Fla' is a Cork slang term meaning to have sexual congress. A common folk and lexicographical derivation connects it to the Irish word 'fleadh' (meaning a feast or party), shifting semantically to describe a lively or desirable person.

Someone told an American - who repeated it back to me - that Irish dancing came from ‘during colonialism’ people trying to hide when they were dancing in bars - cos the Brits didn’t like it - so they didn’t move their arms incase soldiers were looking through windows. Best laugh i’d had in ages!

"On their visits to one another, the women of the aul are continually spinning; or one of them, squatting on the ground may be weaving. ... As usual, every one of them is keen to handle my camera, and finds great pleasure in looking through the view-finder." #EllaMaillart #Photography #Kyrgyzstan
A smiling Kyrgyz woman spinning wool on a drop spindle with a central whorl and wound wool yarn at Ak-Shyyrak in the Tian Shan mountain system of Kyrgyzstan.

The shaft is the straight wooden rod held vertically to spin and twist raw fibres into continuous threads, whilst the whorl is the weighted, rounded disc in the middle which acts as a flywheel to maintain momentum and steady rotation when flicked.

The yarn cop is the oval bundle of freshly-spun wool fibres wrapped securely around the shaft just above the whorl.
