ACTION ALERT 🚨 Right now, the Senate is considering adding language to the transportation reauthorization bill to restrict bike lanes. Tell Congress: funding for bike safety projects MUST continue! Take action: action.bikeleague.org/page/101946/...
Action alert graphic. A man holds a sign next to a bike lane that says "Everyone deserves safe streets!" White text on a black background: "Congress Must Save America's Bike Lanes
Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy erased the data that shows bike lanes reduce crashes and don’t cause congestion. Then he asked Congress to defund all bike lanes — and even remove bike lanes from busy roads.

Now, Congress may be listening: the Senate is considering adding language to the transportation reauthorization bill that would restrict what kinds of roads could have bike lanes on them at all.

We need everyone in Congress to hear us clearly: bike lanes save lives and bicyclists have a right to ride on the roads and get home safely.

Tell your elected representatives: vote NO on any transportation reauthorization bill that would restrict the ability of federal funding to be used on bike safety projects. bikeleague.org/action-center"

Last week, the Secretary of Transportation sent a letter asking Congress to restrict almost all federal transportation funding for bike lanes, and instead fund bike lane removals. This is just the latest escalation in the administration's war on bike lanes. Take action: bikeleague.org/action-center
Graphic promoting "NEW BLOG: The real threat behind the administration’s Transportation Reauthorization recommendations by Caron Whitaker"

An illustration of a cyclist's POV as they ride up to a blocked bike lane with a "road closed ahead" sign. Above the illustration is text:

"Last week, Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy sent a letter outlining the administration’s priorities for the next Transportation Reauthorization bill to the Senate.

In it, he asked Congress to restrict the ability to use any and all transportation funds for building bike lanes, and to instead make funds available to take out bike lanes.""This is just the most recent escalation of the administration’s war on bike lanes.
January 2025: Grants for bike safety projects are frozen. Grantees are asked to remove bike facilities from proposed projects to get funding.
November 2025: Chairman Graves of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee states, "We’re not going to be spending money on ... bike paths or walking paths [in the next transportation bill].”
March 2026: The administration tried to remove DC’s 15th Street bike lane (spoiler alert: we won the court case protecting it) as a test case to restrict bike lanes on National Highway System roads.
July 2026: Secretary Sean Duffy says he’s defunded “DEI bike lanes” and put $1.7 billion towards “real” projects
Now: Duffy is asking Congress to restrict almost all federal transportation funding for bike lanes, instead asking Congress to fund bike lane removals.""What do we do?
Focus on Congress. It is Congress’s job to be a check on the administration, and they have a very powerful tool to do so: the next reauthorization bill.

We must ensure Congress knows how important biking infrastructure is to their constituents (that’s you!) and ask them to ensure the USDOT follows the law. That means allowing the funding Congress intended for bicycling and walking to go to local priorities and local governments.

Congress is working from home in August and then again in October. This is a great time to meet with them in their district office, or invite them for a bike ride or infrastructure tour. And we have resources to help you do that.

SEND A MESSAGE TO CONGRESS: bikeleague.org/action-center"

🚨 URGENT ACTION ALERT 🚨 This week, Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) funding is on the chopping block. Tell your senators: the transportation bill extension MUST include continued funding for SS4A. Take action NOW: action.bikeleague.org/page/101121/...
Action Alert graphic. A man in an East Coast Greenway cycling jersey holds a sign that says "Bike Lanes Save Lives" next to a bike lane with cyclists riding by. Text overlay: "Urgent: Save Safe Streets and Roads for All Funding. Bikeleague.org/action-center. "Action Alert graphic. White text on a red background: "The Senate has a chance to protect funding for bike lanes and safer roads. They need to hear from you. This week, the Senate will be voting on a short-term extension of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Critically, this proposed extension strips out funding for a key program created in the IIJA: the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program.

Safe Streets and Roads for All has made $5 billion over five years directly available to local communities who want to plan for and build safer roads for people walking, biking, taking transit, and driving.

Tell your senators: the continuing resolution must include continued funding for SS4A. Without it, communities will not be able to access critical funding to build safer roads.

🚨 ACTION ALERT🚨 Last week, USDOT removed bike lanes, road diets, & speed management from its Proven Safety Countermeasures website. Join us in calling on Congress to demand a briefing on why the administration is erasing protections for vulnerable road users: action.bikeleague.org/page/100481/...
TELL CONGRESS: USDOT should put safety first! bikeleague.org/action-center🚨 Last week, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) removed bike lanes, road diets, and speed management from their Proven Safety Countermeasures website.
Proven safety countermeasures are lighthouses to guide officials towards safer roadway designs. They rest on a mountain of evidence. They are prominent and illuminating, suggesting the most effective infrastructure for solving our nation’s traffic death crisis.

By taking down these strategies, the Federal Highway Administration is effectively telling states and local governments that they no longer encourage states and local governments to invest in safety!
USDOT needs to explain why it is putting politics ahead of safety.
On Friday, Rep. Rick Larsen (D-WA), ranking Democrat on the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee released a statement asking for a briefing from the USDOT about why these safety measures are no longer encouraged, adding that “It’s not political to say bike lanes and speed cameras improve safety; it’s a statement of fact.”

We need your help in amplifying Rep. Larsen’s message. Please ask your member of Congress to join Rep. Larsen in asking for a briefing. We deserve an explanation on why the administration is erasing protections for vulnerable road users.

This 500-page plus bill is our first look at how Congress is approaching transportation issues in this reauthorization – and while it’s not our worst fears realized, there are proposed cuts and repeals across the board that temper any enthusiasm. During National Bike Month, learn how communities can make it safe and easy for everyone to bike, roll, and walk to schools, libraries, parks, and more. bit.ly/4aKZkG2 #ActivePeople
Screenshot of CDC's "Strategies for Physical Activity Through Community Design" page. "Engaging in physical activity is one of the best things people of all ages can do to improve their health. Physical activity is vital for healthy aging, can reduce chronic diseases, and prevent early death. Yet, only about 1 in 4 adults and 1 in 6 high school students fully meet the recommendations in the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.

Activity-friendly communities are places with destinations such as parks, schools, and shops that are attractive and accessible to the community. Activity-friendly communities include welcoming, safe, and convenient places to play, walk, roll and bike to enjoy destinations that the community has to offer. Transit can help make these places more accessible. In other words, these types of communities are designed to connect activity-friendly routes to everyday destinations."

Cycling is a great way for people of all ages to get active this winter! ❄️🚲 You don't even have to go out in the cold — riding a bike at the gym or on your trainer at home for 22 mins a day can help adults meet the recommended 150 mins of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity. #ActivePeople

"“[The League’s Community Spark Grant] helped us
with providing funding so we could do more in our community. We did a Bike Day for Children in Poplar on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation. We gave away bikes and had stickers and other little gifts for all the children. It helped 87 kids get a new helmet.” - Sunee Erickson, of the Fort Peck Tribal Elves.
