The OpenAI model didn’t “escape confinement”. The model was promoted to look for vulnerabilities, exploit them, and keep looking for new ones to exploit, and then look for more, move on, etc. It didn’t “think” to “escape”. Stop anthropomorphizing it, MSM! OpenAI were incompetent, is the truth.

I've had a pretty varied 'career': care work, youth work, homeless hostel work, bar, cabinet making, learning support, amateur musician, teacher, miniature painter. I've returned to study several times. I value all of these experiences and some I occasionally revisit. Who knows what's next? 🙂
A screenshot of a Tumblr post from brightwanderer:

'I think a lot about how we as a culture have turned “forever” into the only acceptable definition of success.

Like… if you open a coffee shop and run it for a while and it makes you happy but then stuff gets too expensive and stressful and you want to do something else so you close it, it’s a “failed” business. If you write a book or two, then decide that you don’t actually want to keep doing that, you’re a “failed” writer. If you marry someone, and that marriage is good for a while, and then stops working and you get divorced, it’s a “failed” marriage.

The only acceptable “win condition” is “you keep doing that thing forever”. A friendship that lasts for a few years but then its time is done and you move on is considered less valuable or not a “real” friendship. A hobby that you do for a while and then are done with is a “phase” - or, alternatively, a “pity” that you don’t do that thing any more. A fandom is “dying” because people have had a lot of fun with it but are now moving on to other things.

I just think that something can be good, and also end, and that thing was still good. And it’s okay to be sad that it ended, too. But the idea that anything that ends is automatically less than this hypothetical eternal state of success… I don’t think that’s doing us any good at all.'

Accurate.
Screenshot of a social media post by Angus McIntyre (@angusm@mastodon.social). The post humorously claims that the UK government's plan to teach 10 million British children how to use VPNs could become one of the largest IT education projects ever. It jokes that experts support the scheme because peer education and incentives will help it succeed, and includes a mock quote saying that, with the rise of autocratic governments worldwide, VPN literacy is more important than ever and that the project comes at the right time. The humour derives from the implication that government internet restrictions would encourage widespread VPN use among young people.

Be sure to use Al when making your next, I don't know, meal plan, for example. Definitely do not call your friend who loves to cook and ask her for her favorite recipes or tips or ways to save time making meals, because you will end
up talking for longer than you had hoped, hearing, perhaps, about her father's cancer diagnosis or how lonely she's been or even what she's planted in her spring garden and then lost with the early frost.

Just a reminder: The Guardian entered a strategic partnership with OpenAI a little while back, so any time you see an article like this from them, you can immediately dismiss it as not credible journalism but just Sam Altman getting his money’s worth.

The UK govt underestimated the carbon emissions of AI data centres. Not by a bit. By a factor of 100. Giving tax breaks for billionaires to generate with an insane, economy-destroying bubble for their word-guessing plagiarism engine will burn the planet.

Remember, if you accidentally misgender or deadname someone, it's very easy to just say "Shit, sorry," and then say the correct name or pronoun. The two important follow-ups are to not rend your garments and make it all about you and to then also make sure you work hard on not doing it again.

A PSA for #TTRPG and #WarHammer40K miniatures painters: "Liquid Green Stuff" is not "Green Stuff" (a 2-part epoxy resin) It's basic acrylic modeling paste colored green You can get 20 times the amount of super high quality acrylic modeling paste for only 2-3x the price from Liquitex or Golden.
A teeny tiny wee 12 millileter pot of Citadel's "Liquid Green Stuff", misleadingly named after the hobby nickname for Kneadatite, a two-part epoxy resin popular among miniatures sculptors, although it is in no way an epoxy resin.

This not-even-a-tablespoon of plain old water-based acrylic modeling paste colored green is sold for about the current price of a mass market paperback book. And it is in one of Citadel's notorious paint pots that tend to not close properly and dry out, wasting the product.A 237 milliliter tub of Liquitex Acrylic modeling paste. This will run you about twice the cost of the Citadel "Liquid Green Stuff" for a supply twenty times larger that may well last you the entire rest of your life, depending on how many cracks and crannies you have to fill in on your miniatures army.A 237 milliliter tub of Liquitex Acrylic modeling paste. This will run you not quite three times the cost of the Citadel "Liquid Green Stuff" for a supply twenty times larger that may well last you the entire rest of your life, depending on how many cracks and crannies you have to fill in on your miniatures army.
