The Cotton Genesis (Cotton MS Otho B VI, 5th century) was one of the tragic victims of the Ashburnham House fire in 1731. Today, we’re delighted to release new multispectral imaging of the manuscript, allowing us to read its texts for the first time in hundreds of years. www.bl.uk/stories/blog...

Happy #worldbookday to this diva
Portrait of Laura Battiferri by Bronzino, 1560, now kept at the Palazzio Vecchio in Florence. She is depicted with her body turned three quarters towards the painter, her head fully turned to her right, wearing a grey and white headpiece covered by a transparent veil falling onto her shoulders before gathering at the front of her bust, where it is pinned to her black dress. The front of her bust is covered by the chemise with an elegant plissé, with a golden bead holding it closed at her throat; the same white chemise also peeks out of her sleeves. For jewellery, she only wears a plain gold pendant, the bottom of which is hidden below the neckline of her dress, and a gold ring with a black stone on her left ring finger. Her hands hold open a manuscript, turned towards the painter. It is bound in black covers, edges coloured red, and uses brown ink.

CfP FEATHERS conference

In early modern England, the production of manuscript texts, whether literary, governmental or legal, was typically a collaborative or “socialized” enterprise, involving both professionals and amateurs. Indeed, the person a modern reader might automatically identify as “the author” rarely exerted sole influence over a text’s production: scribes and manuscript users might repurpose and adjust extracts from earlier literary contexts, while others commissioned intermediaries, such as secretaries or lawyers, to commit their words to paper. At first glance these intermediaries appear either frustratingly anonymous or, as members of a royal secretariat or court of law, institutionalised and thus indistinguishable. Nevertheless, all these contributors leave inky, au
