Dining with divinities. In the House of #Neptune and #Amphitrite in #Herculaneum, the centrepiece of this relatively small domus is the #mosaic that gives the house its name. It could be seen along the main axis of the domus, glittering in an outdoor #triclinium. #MosaicMonday #AncientBluesky 🏺
SUMMER TRICLINIUM MOSAIC, C. 50 CE. HOUSE OF NEPTUNE AND AMPHITRITE, HERCULANEUM

This vibrant wall mosaic translates delicate fresco motifs into glass tesseræ. Within an ornamented architectural frame featuring floral candelabra on flanking pilasters, the sea god Neptune and his wife Amphitrite stand in a central niche. Above them, a sophisticated motif depicts a pleated cloth fan, its bands of colour rolling up at the bottom into stylised, almost Baroque curves. The use of reflective, deeply coloured glass paste rather than matte stone underscores the mercantile owner's commitment to beauty and refined taste. This luxurious outdoor triclinium created an illusion of expansive otium within a remarkably small urban domus. Functioning as a luminous, theatrical backdrop, the mosaic framed the reclining diners, ensuring the true audience for the owner's impeccable taste was anyone viewing the courtyard from the front door.

For #MosaicMonday, let us observe the working professionals of ancient #Rome. This C3 CE #mosaic from the Schola Præconum depicts heralds carrying the tools of their trade. It is the perfect start for a thread exploring the headquarters of Rome's collegia. #AncientBluesky 🏺🧵
FLOOR MOSAIC OF HERALDS, C3 CE. SCHOLA PRÆCONUM

This floor mosaic from the College of Heralds on the Palatine slope depicts several male figures, the præcones, engaged in their official duties. The figures are rendered in black tesseræ against a white background and arranged in loose rows. They wear short tunics and step forward carrying the attributes of their profession, with some holding a caduceus and others carrying square banners decorated with central circles. Roman workers of all kinds organised themselves into guilds or collegia to regulate themselves and to share religious and social responsibilities. A schola served as the physical headquarters and meeting hall for a collegium. This scene offers a rare visual record of the administrative working class, capturing the minor officials whose public announcements and processional duties were absolutely essential to the daily running of the ancient city.

Happy weekend! Here’s an ancient Egyptian bead in the form of a curled-up blue hedgehog! Look at the little face and paws! 🦔💙 Made of faience around 3,600 years ago. National Museum of Scotland 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows an ancient Egyptian hollow blue spherical bead in the form of a hedgehog curled up in a defensive ball displayed on a grey background. It is made of Egyptian faience, a ceramic material with a shiny blue glaze. The hedgehog's snout, ears, paws and tail are shown in relief, and the quills are represented by black dots painted over the surface of the bead. A smll hole for threading runs through the sphere - it can be seen on the right hand side of the bead in my photo. The hedgehog's long ears suggest this is a desert hedgehog. Desert hedgehogs may have symbolized rebirth to the ancient Egyptians because they reappear after hibernating. Dated c.1985 - 1650 BC. On display at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.

Coloured glass thread was used freehand to create the so-called "Cologne Squiggle": the thread begins with a flat arched Z, runs to the right in different wavy lines and ends in an open volute.
