Ancient literature has a tangled group chat. 📜🕸️ Meet Testimonia: explore who cites whom, follow Homer’s connections, and read the passages. Machine-detected, with sources and limitations to inspect. Free to explore: skirnirstudios.com/testimonia/ #DigitalHumanities #Classics
Slide 1 of 4. Who did the ancient authors quote? A screenshot of Testimonia shows a dense web of colored author nodes and citation threads on a dark background. Meet Testimonia. Pick an author. Follow a thread. An interactive map of machine-detected citations.Slide 2 of 4. Start with Homer. A simplified diagram shows selected citing authors: Strabo, 130 passages; Plato, 66; Plutarch, 110; Athenaeus, 128. Testimonia reports 2,421 detected citations of Homer, 155 citing authors and 588 line matches. Machine-detected; not exhaustive.Slide 3 of 4. From a thread to the actual words. Strabo cites Homer. A Greek excerpt from Geography 1.1.16.1 is matched by shared wording to Homer, Iliad 2.496: οἵ θʼ Ὑρίην ἐνέμοντο καὶ Αὐλίδα πετρήεσσαν. Read the passage, inspect the match and follow source links. Matches can be wrong.Slide 4 of 4. Your next rabbit hole is 2,000 years old. Choose an author, follow a connection, and keep your curiosity critical. Machine detection is a starting point, not a verdict. Free to explore, no account needed: skirnirstudios.com/testimonia/. Find Testimonia through the link in our bio.

LIBRARIES BUY BOOKS. In fact, they buy ebook licenses with rather unfavorable terms because of how much the service benefits the community. The only people getting screwed in this situation are libraries and library users. The only people doing the screwing are publishers.

✉️ Explore 145,000 medieval merchant letters as a live map: the correspondence network of Francesco di Marco Datini (c.1363–1412), spanning Florence to Barcelona to North Africa. Visualise routes, travel times & seasonality. docuracy.github.io/datini/ #DigitalHumanities #MedievalHistory
A dark-themed interactive map of the medieval western Mediterranean showing 14th-century merchant letter routes as curved arcs coloured from cyan (fast, 0–5 days) through yellow to red (30+ days). Short land routes between Tuscan cities glow cyan; longer sea routes to Barcelona and Majorca burn orange and red, revealing the unpredictability of medieval maritime travel.
(299 characters)

Long (accessible description for screen readers / figure caption):
Screenshot of the Datini Letters Geospatial Explorer in Travel Time mode. A dark basemap of the western Mediterranean is overlaid with curved arc lines connecting pairs of cities in the Datini merchant network. Arc colour encodes average letter delivery time on a gradient from cyan (near-instant, 0–5 days) through green and yellow (one to two weeks) to orange and deep red-magenta (more than 30 days). Dense clusters of fast cyan arcs radiate from Florence and Pisa across Tuscany, reflecting the reliable day-or-two land post. Arcs reaching westward to Barcelona, Valencia, and Palma de Majorca shift to orange and red, capturing the slower and far more variable sea routes that could take anywhere from a week to several months. City nodes are shown as circles: pink for the main Datini fondacos (Pisa, Florence, Barcelona, Genoa, Valencia, Majorca) and blue for correspondent cities. A sidebar on the left shows the Travel Time mode is selected, with a cyan-to-red colour legend and a filter slider for minimum letters per route.
