My WW2 vet grandfather was one of the most left-wing people I ever knew. Long before anyone knew who Bernie Sanders or the DSA was, he told me he'd vote socialist if he could. I miss him terribly, but for his sake I'm glad he didn't live long enough to see the destruction of everything he fought for

My two brains
Russell and Ron Mael of the band Sparks. Ron is an old man with glasses, a moustache, and slicked back hair, conservatively dressed and sitting at a keyboard. Russell, despite also being an old man, is flamboyantly dressed and is dancing while singing into a microphone.

I do not understand the folks furious at trans people for responding in anguish when the party that they've been told would protect them treats their existence as negotiable. I do not understand thinking trans folks have political power and responsibility where candidates have none.

Materially, what banning trans folks from participation in sports, in women's spaces, in public spaces, does is create a case for doing the same thing to someone else. It erodes all of our protections, protections which folks have died for.

*sigh* Under this justification, a whole class of offensive language may become permissible. Before we get to that, I do think that this decision (intentionally or not) chooses not to take seriously cultural context or the history of "camps" in modernity. CONTENT WARNING IN THE NEXT POST.

If you object to public-funded housing of homeless people, in the end the objection cannot be the cost, because we pay a premium to be cruel to homeless people. At the bottom of the objection will always sit dehumanizing cruelty and a desire for eradication.

LLMs appear useful in writing/coding for the same reason cars appear as a good choice for transportation. Because they let the users reap the benefits while outsourcing a majority of the costs to the rest of society

So, coming back to the sign, there are two mini-conversations here, with two diffferent authors, and with two overlapping intended audiences: >>
Photo of a sign with a doorbell attached. The printed sign reads:

CURRENT GUGGENHEIM ACCES BY HUSKY CARD ONLY
[Logos for Amazon, FedEx, UPS]
DELIVERIES/VISITORS
PLEASE RING THIS DOORBELL

Delivery hours M-F 9:00am-(obscured)
University of Washington

Taped next to the doorbell is a hand written note that reads:
yes! it rang! Pelase wait 30 seconds before pressing again.
thanks!

From The Faultline, a San Jose Earthquakes SG (posted on other platforms, I couldn't find them on here) #GWOut
Statement on the Hiring of Gavin Wilkinson
MLS fanbases expect their front office to uphold high standards of integrity, safety, and accountability.
Involving Gavin Wilkinson the Earthquakes organization, even as an advisor or consultant, sends a harmful message to supporters, community partners, staff, and players.
Wilkinson's repeated failure to prioritize the safety of women and gold abusive people accountable makes him unfit to work for the San Jose Earthquakes organization.
We call on the Quales to terminate the contract of Gavin Wilkinson. #GWOut

THREAD. Contrary to what you are being told, 40 years of polling have established that shifting money away from police/prisons toward social services is one of the most popular public policies among *all* political demographics. But it's not just that, it goes way deeper.

Relatedly, any organization that claims to be taking a "human-centered" approach, but is only asking "How do we use [whatever tech] responsibly?" and not "Should we use [tech] at all" is in fact centering the tech, and not the people. >>

The red state, blue state divide is real. But it's driven by more than just politics
Recent research suggests there's more going on with "ideological sorting" than simply moving to places that match one's politics. It's often one of many deciding factors, such as taxes or safety.
